I have been written to by many people this time of year asking how to find the UNCUT version of the Christmas classic Muppet Family Christmas so I thought I would share what I have found to work for me with you.
For those that may not know, this wonderful holiday classic is missing several scenes and thanks to a wonderful response letter from Brian Henson I received a couple years back, I found out that the scenes are missing due basically to "owners rights" on those songs (my personal opinion is that those certain folks involved wanted insane sums of money for Henson to use their material). If you watch the typical version that everyone purchased on VHS a few years back, you will notice that some things just don't make sense--a couple of the scenes missing at where Fozzie and the Snowman sing outside (this is where Fozzie first realizes the Snowman can talk), another scene is where Miss Piggy sings outside when she first arrives at the house, and so on and so on. I guess Henson had to edit to the best of their ability and try not to have it look to choppy..though a valiant effort, those of us that recall the actual original showing on television can pick out which scenes did not make a lot of sense.
Now for how I was able to find an original uncut version......I found a lady in the United Kingdom who was selling her "vhs" copy of this. I asked her if she knew if was "uncut" she did not BUT she was kind enough to play the movie and look for a couple of the scenes I had mentioned...amazingly enough, the UK has the uncut version. You need to look for the box with a U on the front of it to know it is from the United Kingdom. Now here is the kicker, their tapes will not play on most of our VHS players so what to do.....I myself took my version (of course I purchased it immediately and had it shipped here) to a professional video editing place and asked them if they could transfer it onto VHS. They thought I was crazy to pay $25 to transfer a tape that I could buy in the store at the time but I explained the situation to them and then they completely understood :-) I took my new vhs version as well as my UK version home in a day or two and was tickled pink to find that indeed the UK has the original uncut version! Why, I have not a clue.
Now this year I will be taking that same UK tape back to the same place and asking them to transfer it onto DVD for me so that I do not loose this classic over time to tape decay.
When I have a moment, I will update this guide with a scanned photo of both the front and the back of the UK tape I purchased. I will also place my id name over the image so as to keep anyone with less than honorable intentions from using it. :0)
