This guide is for anyone who is selling a motorcycle on either eBay or Craigslist. I was going to post it for Craigslist because that is where it happened, but this can also apply to eBay sellers who meet the buyer to talk about the bike. Here is what happened. My roommate posted an ad on craigslist for selling his motorcycle. He also posted his phone number there so people could call him for information since it is easier to sell and explain the details over the phone. He got a call that a guy wanted to meet with him about 2 miles from our house in the Kmart parking lot to take a look at the bike. My roommate drove the bike there and met with the guy who drove his truck there. They talked about it for a while and then the guy asked to ride it around the parking lot to see how it would ride. My roommate said yes, as long as he just took it around the parking lot. The guy agreed, and gave him his hat and sunglasses and borrowed my roommates helmet. The guy took it for a spin around the lot....and then took off!!! He raced down the road and stole his bike. My roommate immediately called the cops, but it took them 30 minutes to get there. He finally flagged one down that drove in the parking lot (not to help him though) and he told him the entire story. Keep in mind that the crook left his truck there when he took the bike. It turns out that the truck had out of state plates, and when my roommate asked the cop if they could dust for prints or get info out of it, or even tow it....they couldn't. It was on Kmart's lot and that is private property. They have to wait 24 hours until they can do anything. The cop's point of view was that my roommate could have just said that about any vehicle and they can't just tow anyone's car that is sitting there. This is a horrible situation that can happen to ANYONE. My roommate isn't an idiot, he's a Mechanical Engineer with over 40 people reporting to him...but he is trusting. But he did do some dumb things when you look back on this. He didn't get an email from the guy, the guy called from a Private Number, and he didn't get any information or a drivers license, motorcycle license, insurance info or anything else from him before letting him take the bike. But honestly, even if he did get those things, this crook was such a professional that he: used a blocked number, took a stolen car to meet him, and had the guts to look him in the eye and steal his bike right in front of him. Even if he would have asked for license, I'm sure it would have been fake. The moral of the story: be very careful when selling items and make sure that you get at least a driver's license. Be careful! Think of all the times when we trust random people. Letting in the AC guy, letting the cable guy come in, or meeting a person from eBay or craigslist for a Local Pickup at your house. If this guide helps you be a little more cautious, or at least think of someone who this could help, please mark YES that this was helpful. With the economy these days and everyone selling something, we sometimes get excited about a sale and forget our common sense. Thanks for reading.
