I have enjoyed reading the guides on buying pocket knives and have a few additional comments that might help those new to the knife collecting or buying business. First of all I have no objection to Chinese made knives. They are absolutely some of the best made knives out there for the money and I have personally Rockwell tested some of them and they are what they say they are, so no complaints there. The complaints about Chinese made knives I have encountered do not come from the fact they are made in China, but from the fact that the buyers were lied to about the country of origin and paid way too much for the knife, or otherwise cleverly deceived by the ads that are prevalent on ebay and everywhere else. Some of the knives that are sold on ebay as "german made" definitely are not. There is no "Munich Ironworks" for example. This is stamped on the knife in China at the insistence of the importer and is done intentionally to deceive the buyer, period. Now this is probably not strictly illegal but it sure makes the buyer think the knife is made in Germany. Actually some ebay sellers even advertise these knives as made in Germany. Maybe they just don't know, but I seriously doubt that. When in doubt, send the seller an email and ask. If they don't respond, then you know you are being led down a path. I have found Chinese examples of the following knives and I am sure there are more- and I am sure there will be more in the future. I don't have a problem with that, as long as they are represented as what they are. I have often observed that if you took everything out of Wal Mart that is made in China there would be nothing left but the light fixtures. The knives I have seen so far that one would think are made in the United States or Germany but are in fact made in China include some of the following: Kershaw, Buck, Buck Creek, Kissing Crane, Schrade, Old Timer, Owl Head, Remington, Winchester, Colt, Smith and Wesson, Puma, Gerber, Marbles, German Classics, and just about anything with an American sounding name that you have never heard of, like Rough Rider, American Classics, Magnum (Chinese Boker), Bent Creek, and Steel Warrior. Again, these are well made knives and comparable in quality to anything out there but you should never pay more than 10 dollars for any of them, regardless of how they are described, and if you don't pay more than 10 dollars, you generally won't be disappointed in the Chinese made knives. It is generally safe to assume that, if the country of origin is not given, the knife is made in China but that is not always the case as in the deception mentioned above where the knife may be advertized as made in Germany, then you just have to recognize the name brand as Chinese. Also, just because the knife description says something about Germany, do not assume the knife is made there. You will often see the stamping "German Steel". That means nothing. The knife could still be made in China, and probably is.
