Here is an easy way to test your Soil in just 2 days.
1. Add 1 cup of your soil, 1 teaspoon of detergent (liquid) to a 1 gallon jar.
2. Fill 2/3 full with water, close tightly and shake hard for 2 minutes.
3. Set on a level surface. After 1 minute, mark the level of settled soil on the jar. This is the sand level.
4. After 2 hours, mark the new soil level, this is the silt level.
5. After 2 days, mark the final soil level, this is your clay level.
compare the depth of each layer to the total depth of settled soil to determine the percentage of each. This will help you decide what is needed to make your soil great.
PH TEST:
1. Place 1 Tablespoon of soil in a container. Add distilled water, stir until mix is consistency of a milk shake.
2. Let sit for 1 to 2 hours, then add more water if needed to keep the mixture at the right consistency.
3. Lay a strip of litmus paper on the mixture and let it sit for a minute. Remove the litmus paper and rinse with distilled water.
4. Compare the color of your test strip to the chart supplied with the soil test kit to determine the PH level. (Fish aquarium tst kits work too).
