This product is relatively new to the toy scene, and has some unique properties. The most notable is that it never dries out. It also floats when wet, is non-toxic, and contains no wheat, gluten, or peanut products. It can be baked hard then carved and painted if you wish and is a very versatile medium. It is marketed as for children 3 years and up. My experience with it was with a four year old.
The four year old received a play set with moon sand at a Christmas party. We set it up to play on patio which is carpeted. This kid had a blast with this toy/substance! In the joyous way of children she had that stuff everywhere! She molded some really cool stuff and had decorated her clothing, shoes, hair, and the carpet. Remember this stuff is not dry...it is always moist and as such is eminently moldable. In other words, just like damp beach sand, it will collect in the crevices of shoes, clothing, skin, or whatever! It is relatively easy to clean up, once you get over the shock of how quickly it spreads. Just vacuum, sweep and wash the kids and voila! it's gone. It does not stain and leaves no residue that I could find, but it will easily get away from you (kind of like dropping a bunch of seed beads) if they are allowed to play with it in the house. I recommend outside play, followed by a really good brush off or a bath, depending on the age of the children at play.
You will find this product here on ebay or stocked in your local toy store next to the play doh. There are many many accessories available to go with this product. I recommend getting the covered play box if you plan to leave it out of doors, because it does float in water. If you leave it out uncovered, the children are likely to find that it is no longer there after a rain storm.
I don't really agree with the age appropriateness of this product for 3-5 year olds, however, due to its ability to spread itself around. Enjoy and be creative, and don't forget the whisk broom when they are done!
