Here are a few things you need to take into consideration when purchasing monogrammed horse halters:
- Sizing - Make sure you order the proper size. Manufacturers may vary slightly, so take measurments of your horse or a halter that currently fits well. Most critical is the nose circumference. I have a sizing chart posted on my website to help you make the best choice.
- Colors - People seem to prefer monograms that contrast with the color of the halter. Dark halters look best with light colored monograms. Lighter colored halters look best with dark monograms. Some dark colors can look OK together, like the classic hunter green and navy or red and black, but understand you may not be able to read them from much of a distance.
- Fonts - Easily read monograms are normally done in all capital letters. Whether it's block style, calligraphy or mini saloon, they take up about the same amount of space per letter. A script font can be very nice, but even for shorter names, letter sizes must be reduced if your name includes any letters which fall below the normal writing line, like g - j - p - q - y - z.. If you are unsure, ask to see samples. We want to make certain you like what you order, as custom items are not returnable.
- Monogram Placement - The nose is the most common placement, followed by the left cheek, then the right cheek. The longest writing surface is the nose, which will generally accomodate up to 18 spaces comfortably. Cheeks will accomodate up to 12 spaces, normally. If your name is a little longer, we can reduce the size of the letters to enable it to fit. Remember, the longer the name, the smaller the lettering. Consider abbreviating whenever possible. I'll be happy to suggest abbreviations if you need help.
- What to Monogram - The majority of people put their horse's name on the nose. If using the registered name, that's usually the best placement, given the length of some of the names. "Barn" names can be put on the nose or cheek. Rider's names usually go on the left cheek. Monograms may also include ranch names, award names, classes, year, or any saying that will fit.
- Timing - Order your custom items at least 3-4 weeks in advance of the date needed. If you are a little late in ordering, ask first if we can meet your deadline. We'll make every effort to do so.
