Every once in a while, we get a question about how collectors should store their slabbed coins. Hopefully, we can answer that question and help you to protect your coins not only from a potential thief, but also from the elements.

All coins should be stored in a cool, dry, and dark place. Humidity is one of the bigger dangers to your coins. Slabs are not completely air tight and gas can seep into the holder. You can minimize this by adding a dehumidifier in the room that you store your coins, or if you use a safe or safety deposit box at your bank, you should use desicant gel packs. These gel packs are a cheap way to limit humidity, which can cause your coins to spot or tone. Make sure to read the instructions on the gel packs for how long they should be left in. Again, follow the instructions with your gel pack.

A few people have asked if a gun safe is a good place to store their coins. In a single word, No!!! Think about the different things that you might put in or on your gun. Gunpowder and cleaning oils are chemicals that may cause problems with your coins. Avoid using a gun safe to store your coins.

Even placement of your safe is important. Most experts say that a safe should be placed near the corner of a house. In the event of a fire, the center of the house gets the hottest. Your safe may be rated for a certain temperature for a certain time, but having it at the corner will reduce the chance you will go over the limit of the safe's rating. Heat can do a number of things to your coins, such as melting the slab, as well as toning your coin. In this case, toning would be a very bad thing, as it would be accelerated and perceived as "artificial toning" which is thought of as a problem coin in the marketplace.

We hope that these tips have answered some of your questions, and will help you to keep your coins safe! If you found our guide helpful, remember to give us a vote! Thanks!

Happy collecting!
