The American Platinum Eagle series began in 1997. Platinum Eagles have been produced every year since then in an Uncirculated and a Proof finish. The Proof Platinum Eagles are different from other American Eagles in that every year the reverse design changes. From 1997 through 2005, the designs depicted vistas of liberty, mostly scenes from different areas of the United States, such as the deserts of the Southwest and the swamps of the Southeast. Starting in 2006, the designs depict the 3 branches of the Federal Government, Judicial, Legislative, and Executive.

Some people find that collecting the same coin over and over in a series, where the only thing that ever changes is the date, boring and unexciting. With the Proof Platinum Eagles, you never have that, since the design changes every year! You also have some flexibility in what you collect in the Proof Platinums. Some people hear Platinum and think "Oh, that's extremely expensive!" The Proof Platinums come in 4 different sizes: 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce, allowing you to select the size that fits your budget, whether you can afford only a few hundred per coin, or a few thousand, you can find a range that works for you!

To top it all off, these coins have very low relative mintages and carry a certain "prestige" element in collecting them as platinum is a precious metal that is presently valued at close to twice that of gold.
