 Certainly,modern Damascus knives are very beautiful and good sharpness.
But we must know how to make modern steel and laminated Damascus soft iron.
All of Damascus made with hot press machine and mass-produce materials.
Weld Forging is machine work.
All of knife are made of laminated broad board.
The beautiful design knives come from pressed and punched knife shape. 
I think modern knife are so expensive.
The cost come from alloyed steel materials (chrome nickel tungsten vanadium and so on).

We know that modern steel articles are expensive and fully handmade steel and forged tamahagane articles are very cheap.
Tamahagane is made of only iron and carbon.
But it takes a lot of cost and work.
We sharpen and remove an electric grinder mark with JPN natural water stones.
Because they are cheaper.
Please examine the retail price of fully sharpened Tamahagane knives.
We respect ancient work.
