General

So far I have located 29 kits of the Supermarine S.6B racing seaplane. This plane is famous as the 1931 outright winner of the Schneider Trophy for Britain. The Schneider Trophy contests ran from 1913 to 1931. Some of the kits are readily available, but some are now quite scarce. One of the kits, Atelier NOIX #07 (1/48) is resin and comparatively rare. Four others, Peerless (1/24) Cleveland (1/16 and 1/24) and Dumas (1/16) are flying balsa kits. The Peerless kit, which was issued in 1934, is among the earliest models of the S.6B I am aware of and like the early  Cleveland models from 1932 onwards is exceedingly hard to find, but the Dumas kit is still readily available. The rest - apart from the 1/72 plastic and resin Pavla - are impact molded plastic kits in either 1/48 or 1/72 scale and most of them come up on eBay from time to time. There are at least four Airfix patterns - 87, 1391, 1007 and 1007-4, in a variety of packaging options (box, blister and bag), all at 1/72 scale. The 75th anniversary edition was issued in 2000 copies, packaged in a tin with the Supermarine Spitfire which was its evolutionary successor. The Frog kits are also 1/72 - pattern numbers 4900, F164 and F.164F. The Frog molds have also been used more recently to manufacture the models marketed as Chematic, AirLines (4900), Eastern Express (72257), Zvezda and Novo. Hawk issued models 700-69, 618-60 and 700, all 1/48 scale, along with 521-100 which was issued as a 2-in-1 kit with the Mr Mulligan land-based racer. There are two Testors models in 1/48 scale, which also seem to be Hawk patterns, #910 and the Golden Age series.

The Airfix Kits

Shown are the seven known Airfix kits. On the left is #87 (Type 2,3), then the two 1391 kits (Type 1), then the 1973 Series 1 (Type 4) blister pack. The 75th Anniversary edition tin is shown far right, after the 1987-1988 boxed #1007 (Type 8) versions. The 1007-4 number indicates Airfix manufacture, the 1007 alone indicates manufacture by Humbrol. The airfixcollecting forum offers the following (Richard Humm): "Supermarine S.6B 1391/87/01007-4/01007 1/72 scale. Available from 1957 to 1975. Appeared in 1985 catalogue (9 02076) but was not issued. Reissued from 1987 to 1991. Included in 08678 70th Anniversary of the Spitfire in 2006. Also issued by Plasty (Germany) as kit series 1640 number 21 (1950s-1960s). Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 bags, Type 4 card and Type 8 box."

The Hawk & Testors Kits

The six known Hawk and Testors kits are shown above. The 1955 #700 and the #700-69 Picture Gallery editions are at left, followed by the 1960 kit packaged with Mr Mulligan, then the1958 #618-60, the 1976 "Golden Age" kit, and finally the 1991 Testors kit.

The FROG Kits

The FROG kits have been produced under a variety of labels after the original molds were sold to other manuafacturers. Shown are AirLines, Chematic, Zvezda, Novo, Novoexport and Eastern Express variants, as well as three Frog-badged kits (top left).

Other Kits

Pictured at left areare the Peerless (top), Cleveland SF-19 (centre) and Dumas RP404 (bottom) balsa kits, then the NOIX and the newer plastic and resin Pavla #72060 (right). Not shown are the Cleveland D-19 and M-19.

There is also a kit by Aerotech AT32001, but this kit is, to the best of my knowledge, an S6 from 1929.
