Sock monkeys are keepsakes that have delighted American children for nearly a century.

In 1880, the Nelson Knitting Mills in Rockford, Illinois began making Rockford Red Heel Socks. In 1920, after a customer made a sock monkeydoll from a pair of the cotton work socks, the company began including sewing directions with each pair.

Sock monkeys became very popular during the Great Depression because many people did not have extra money to purchase toys for their children.
