For years and years, the Japanese Supreme Master of Forging Irons, Katsuhiro Miura, labored in near obscurity. Known largely to only the professional golfers and major club manufacturers, he forged the best blades for many of the major manufacturers' PGA Tour Players. On the Miura website, Mr. Miura described the CB-201 iron as "perhaps his best ever forged iron." High praise from a man considered the "best of the best" when it comes to forging irons. Now, he has introduced the CB-202s.

Like the CB-201s they replaced, the CB-202s have a generous cavity-back and the cavity-back features the gold Miura logo. In a word--sweet! The changes also include a slightly thinner top line and a slightly more rounded toe. The lie angle appears slightly different so these irons cut through rough easier. The soles even look thinner, although they are probably just the same and the other changes just make the soles appear thinner. The 202s also appear to have slightly less off-set, making it even easier to work the ball. You would probably have to have owned the 201s to actually notice most of these slight changes in the original.

After purchasing the Miura CB-202 irons, I had the club maker replace the shafts with True Temper Tour Concept Satin S3 stiff flex shafts, add Grip Master Perforated Leather grips (expensive, but DEFINITELY worth the money!), and adjust the swing weight to D4. The feel is fantastic, almost as good as a blade! In fact, you feel the difference before you ever look up for the ball. Center contact feels like a practice swing. Mis-hits fly pretty much the same as good shots with a little loss of distance. What you don't get is the "shock" you get with blades when your contact is off-center. You can work the ball left or right and hit it low or high with very little effort. I have never played a better cavity-back iron, regardless of the manufacturer. There simply is NO COMPARISON! (Although the more famous, better-looking CB-301s are technically cavity-back irons, they really are much more like the Mizuno "Cut Muscle" irons, or "near blades.")

The CB-202s are very durable and playable. The finish lasts a long time. The soles and faces look good after hundreds of rounds. I clean my clubs at least weekly and I confess to using Club Glove head covers at all times.

I have played across the United States and extensively in the Carribbean and I have NEVER seen anyone else playing them, regardless of where I was playing. Most golfers have never seen them in person! If you can afford them, you owe it to yourself to try them. Buy them previously-owned and let someone else absorb the initial depreciation. I bought my 3-pw set, previously-owned, custom rebuilt for $1200 shipped. Now, that sounds expensive until you consider MSRP is $185/club, WITHOUT the custom grips. Astonishingly, CB-202s continue to sell for over $1,000/set on eBay because they appear to be in extremely short supply.

The CB-202s are close to perfection, whether you are a tour pro, or a better player looking to get even better. Over the 15 years I have played golf, I have owned about 25 different sets of irons from a variety of manufacturers. Miura CB-202s give you the "look at address" of blades and the forgiveness of cavity-backs. The next time you want to take your game to the infamous "next level," (wherever that is!), don't forget the old adage--"It's the quality of your mis-hits that defines how 'good' you are." No other cavity-back will help you look and play like "the player you want to be" than the CB-202s. When you pull a 202 from your bag, the other players will assume you are the "Alpha Dog" in your foursome. Now, go use your new toys to dig a little dirt and bury some bones--your opponents, preferably!
