Recently I have been collecting military related items and even a few off ebay, and have read many articles on fake medals, swords etc. But what gets overlooked is what is in between. For example, I've bought many vietnam era pouches and packs only to see reproduction straps and belts added to the main original piece. Also I have noticed many original collectibles (maybe used by a re-enactor) "enhanced". An old helmet may be worth a few bucks for display and worth even more if usable, but with writing on the cover or paint adds even more. Was this original? Was it touched up later to look better or hide defects or worse added to increase value. Also lots or relics are being uncovered here (US) and overseas. It is neat to find old stuff buried but ask: Was this trouser button posibly from the 1900's, not civil war? Is this just a rusty fork from the 1920's? Is the eBay auction price decent even if it turns out not to be something I like? Remeber, there was a huge gap between WW1 and WW2. What happened to all the militaria in between? Was everything used only for wars? Or is it post Vietnam stuff? These are really silly questions we sometimes forget to ask. If your buying something as "all original" just be aware it may be new, old, wrong era, wrong country even all mixed up into one fabulous group or piece the seller may not even be aware of. I've bought a few "mistakes" and use those pieces to show collectors. Hope this Helps!
