Microdermabrasion is being advertised by cosmetics companies, spas and doctors offices as a quick way to improve the look of your skin. But what is it exactly? And why would you want it? And who gets the most from it... or should avoid it?
Microderm(abrasion) takes the top layer of dead skin cells off your skin through the use of a fine abrasive material. Aluminum oxide crystals is most commonly used because they can be very finely milled and cause less irritation. Best results come from a product with the smallest particles - you don't want to damage healthy skin by scraping too deeply.
Microderm is beneficial for a number of reasons. Taking the top layer of dead cells increases circulation and adds a healthy glow to the skin. Scars, age spots and pores are minimized. Collagen production is stimulated, adding future benefits.
Individuals with dry, sun damaged skin benefit the most from microderm. Fine lines, wrinkles, and large pores can be minimized for many. But there are individuals who should not use microderm: those with active acne, active rosacea, or auto-immune disorders affecting the skin. Those with very fair, sensitive skin should use a light hand and only use microderm products every 7-10 days.
One final word: There are a lot of microderm products out there... Look for those that use finely milled crystals for the first step, and then provide a second step that refines and smooths the skin. A good example of this would be Mary Kay's Microdermabrasion. Step 1 uses aluminum oxide crystals to take off the dead skin layer, and step 2 smooths the surface of the skin and cools any irritation. Step 1 can be done in the shower or at the sink - but use lots of water to remove all the crystals before applying the refining lotion and then your moisturizer.
Using microdermabrasion once or twice a week can improve the texture and tone of your skin!
