1. Which metal detector is good for a beginner?
Every metal detector carried by Aardvark Metal Detectors can easily be mastered by even the most novice user. Like any hobby, reading the manual, joining online communities or local clubs, and practicing with the machine are the best ways to enhance your experience.
For most beginners we recommend the First Texas Titan series of metal detectors, the Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505 metal detector and the MP series; MP5 Swiftseeker, MP3 Pro Digital, and MPX Digital metal detectors.
2. How deep will my metal detector find metal?
Most metal detectors come standard with an 8" search coil and will locate a coin sized object buried as deeply as 6". This is a general rule for the majority of entry-level metal detectors but there are many other variables that can influence the depth a metal detector can get.A general rule for getting more depth on a metal detector is: The bigger the coil, the deeper it will go. Coils upwards of 8" will find coin sized objects buried deeper than 6", many of them will find coin sized objects buried as deep as 12".
Another general rule is: Smaller search coils can pinpoint treasure amongst trash better, and will find smaller coins and jewelry buried close to the surface that larger coils will miss.
And finally: the larger the metal item is, the easier it will be to detect. Standard search coils usually can't miss buried cache's and treasure chests!
3. What metal detecting accessories will I need?
Aardvark Metal Detectors is known for putting together the perfect accessory package to get every metal detectorist started, but there are a few accessories we recommend once you become more dedicated to this hobby.- Larger search coils to search for deeply buried treasure.
- Smaller search coils to search for small treasure in trashier areas.
- Pinpointers and probes to help locate treasure in the holes and dirt you've already dug up.
- Headphones are an invaluable addition to every metal detector and can make the difference between hearing trash and finding treasure. A quality pair, made for metal detecting, with adjustable volume for each ear is a treasure in itself!
- Scoops are handy for finding treasure buried in sand or in the water on beaches.
- Diggers, trowels and small shovels are an absolute necessity for finding treasure by cutting through tough grass, sod and soils.
4. Where can I use my metal detector?
The first place to start metal detecting is in your own yard. Practice makes perfect, and you'll need to practice digging a hole and re-plugging it. Besides; who knows what's buried right behind your home! After you've done your yard, hit up your friends! You would be surprised how much you can find on private property! The next place to go metal detecting is public parks and beaches. Most states and counties have no problem with metal detectorists hunting in public areas, but make sure to check with your local city hall for the rules in your specific location.
5. Where can I find other metal detectorists?
Local clubs and group hunts are great ways to meet other metal detectors, learn the local laws in your county/state, and get tips on metal detecting in your area.If there are no local clubs in your area, or if you feel comfortable with online interaction, check out one of the many metal detecting and treasure hunting forums online or just give us a call! We'll be happy to help you with any questions you have!
