Mego Corporation created their own generic line of monsters in the early 1970's to combat competitor AHI who had the official universal license. They produced four characters, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy and the Wolfman.

Packaging: The Mad Monsters had several types of packaging over the years.

Solid Boxes- The easiest way to find the Mad Monsters packaged is the original solid boxes, Dracula is the most difficult to find in a solid box.

Window Boxes- Harder to find are the window boxed versions of the Monsters, these are very desirable among collectors.

Kresge Cards- Produced for retailers with a peg hook system these "Kresge" or as some like to call "First Issue" cards are extremely difficult to find.

Lion Rock - The Mego Mad Monsters were reissued in 1980 under the Lion Rock banner, finding sealed examples of these is no easy task.

Figure Variations

Smooth heads- Early Frankenstein and Dracula have smooth heads and Frankenstein has a flat type, this is believed to be the earliest release of the figures and was quickly changed to a more sculpted hair do for both.

In the interem, Mego painted Dracula's hair red and Frankenstein's hair blue, these are some of the rarest versions available.

BEWARE:

Reproductions from 2004 exist of the Mego Mad Monsters, made by the company Classic TV Toys, they are packaged on a card that slightly resembles something produced by Mego. CTVT also produced red dracula and blue frankenstein, take extra care when purchasing that your figures are originals.

Thanks to the megomuseum for the photographs and information.
