A Second Look @ Maxam
With todays inflation and volitility one can not be blamed for conservation and consideration for alternative lower cost goods. While most individuals have heard of the brand "Maxam" one has most likely encountered surprisingly good quality and value. Those that know some things about Maxam would most likely agree that they are high volume importers. They import not just knives but a large variety of clothing, excessories, and electronics. Maxam, a world leader and mega importer in the U.S., makes good to above average products for everyday activities and needs. This short guide is an introduction to the market for low cost cutting tools that make "the rank" as functional, cost effective, and pleasing to the eye.
The Hidden Quality
Over the past years I have watched by and saw companies that used to be connected to connotations of quality faded into the raging flood of importation. All companies change over time, but it was a bit surprising at first to see who would decrease quality for increased initial profit by selling their good name. Several companies such as Buck, Gerber, Winchester, Smith & Wesson, and a handful of other well thought of and established brands ended up destroying what they built. They built an image, a name, a feeling that connected their products to those consumers that bought. Today, these companies listed are following what I call the "father of import giants", Frost Cutlery. Frost used to be known as quality US & German made, sold at one time at a premium. Now we know Frost for cheap dollar knives on late night QVC or HSN networks trying to give the stuff away literally in the tens of thousands in sets of 100 or more. Frost worked hard to build his name. He started selling pocket knives from his lunch box on lunch breaks. Now, the plan has back fired. What the company thought of advancement with importation actually damaged their companies roots and identity through decreased quality and reliability.
After saying that, each of the brands mentioned in the last paragraph still retain a line of higher quality and although volatile, they manage to meet the challenge when they have to. Quality is still not totally gone, but the connection from the consumer is badly damaged through their inconsistancies. The reason I wanted to drag this topic out of the box was to highlight in an on going manner a consumer manual or guide of picking better pocket knives. These pocket knives would have to be affordable and worthy of personal carry and daily cutting tasks. As we started with Maxam, I would like to continue with what they have to offer and their definition of "quality"
The Maxam pocket knifes that excelled at functionality, holding an edge for a durable time frame on normal cutting task, and is pleasing to the hand and eye would have to be the Prismatic Titanium half straight, half serrated liner lock, Rescue Liner Lock, and the Falcon Series Utility Pocket Knives. Not as with other companies, these knives are only know to the masses as the description of the knife and item number, and not a fancy name or series of numbers. I like these knives for several reasons. These Maxam pocket knives are described by the manufacturer as "sleek", "polished", and backed by a "Lifetime Warranty". This is all true. These knives show below are the pictures.
These are my personal pics and not those from the manufacturer.
These knifes have well made liner lock and lock back locking mechanisms. Most of these knives have a pocket clip, heavy duty design and are economical to own. You can find these knives on sale for normally under thirty dollars each. The titanium coated Maxam knives are very nice looking and are practical for daily use. The Falcon Series are work horses and are a steal for the prices that they go for.
