The Baby Beans Doll collection by Mattel from the 1970s and 1980s provide treasured memories of Booful in her yellow pajamas, Bitty Beans in pink pjs, Bedsie Beans in orange pjs and Jeans Beans in his blue denim.  On eBay, everyone can recapture the joy and fun of the entire soft, posable and washable Baby Beans family and "Flop 'em, Plop 'em and Love 'em" all!

Baby Beans Family

Booful Beans Doll - This wonderful little 12-inch doll is wearing her snuggly cloth yellow pajamas with poms and yellow hood with little curls of blond hair peeking out.  Her wonderful smile and bright blue eyes greet you enthusiastically. A 1970 variety of Booful beans has the same great smile though she has changed into the colorful blue with flowers pajamas. Thanks to cjs grandma for the great photo!

Bitty Beans Doll - Booful's adorable sister, Bitty, is wearing cloth pink pajamas and a little pink bonnet.  Her little poms on her pjs complete the outfit as her blue eyes sparkle with joy.

Black Bitty Beans Doll - This 1973 cutie is little African-American Bitty Beans and she's ready to spread snuggles and hugs at naptime in her bright orange pajamas and orange stocking cap.

Biffy Beans Doll - Joining in on the fun is little brother, Biffy, in his blue overalls, orange and yellow shirt and attached blue cap.

Bedsie Beans Doll - Oh Bedsie, so tired and ready for nighty, night!  Bedsie is a 1970 doll decked out in orange pajamas with its matching orange sleeping cap.  Bedsie's sleepy little blue eyes and yawning mouth give away her secret that it's past her bedtime...sweet dreams are sure to follow.

Jeans Beans Doll - What a great addition to the family!  It's 12-inch Jeans Beans with his shock of hair and smashingly 70s denim jacket with a rainbow appliqué on the front, denim pants, and vinyl feet.  He's hip, he's hot and he's waiting for you!

Cry Beans Dolls - Goodness me, little 12-inch Cry Baby Beans has tiny tear ducts that cry real tears...but fear not as she comes with a bottle for soothing her tears away.  She is wearing cute yellow pjs and yellow bonnet with a pink bow.  Her white bib is handy for wiping those last tears as you comfort her troubles away!

Talking Beans Doll - This sweet little talking baby beans doll is wearing blue pajamas with yellow flowers and a matching bonnet tied with a pink ribbon.  She has a pull string and she says the phrases "I'm sleepy", "I love you", "play patty-cake, "go bye-bye", "night night", and "baby hungry".

Baby Beans Markings

  • Popularly called "tush tags", the Baby Beans family feature various cloth tags sewn onto the backs of their bodies which indicate the year the doll was issued by Mattel, Inc. and the contents used to make the doll.  When buying a doll, request a photo of the tush tag, if possible, to confirm the year of issue.
  • If the tush tag is missing, then ask the seller to gently check under the baby's bonnet on the back of the neck for a Mattel marking and the year of issue.

Variations in Baby Beans Dolls

  • Hands - Early Baby Beans dolls had vinyl molded hands with little fingers while later models feature cloth hands with a mitten shape. Later dolls, like the Storybook dolls, have a little velcro strip on their mitten hands to let them hold their items.
  • Bare Bottom Beans - Bitty Beans (pink), Booful Beans (yellow), and Bippy Beans (orange) have a variety that feature a little flap in the back exposing their "bare bottoms". Bippy is only available in the Bare Bottom series.
  • Feet - A variation amongst the Baby Beans doll can be seen in Booful with her feet. Some dolls have little white vinyl feet while others have soft yellow cloth feet.
  • Jeans Beans Variations - Both these dolls were issued by Mattel in 1974 and although similar, they are slightly different.  One type has lighter hair, molded hands and tan "shoes".  Another variation has redder hair, cloth hands, and darker brown "shoes".
  • Fillings - Baby Beans are not filled with beans...some Baby Beans dolls are filled with nutshells, some are filled with polystyrene pellets.  The babies in the Mama and Daddy with babies series are filled with polyurethane foam, polyester fibre, shredded clippings and polyolefins or polystyrene.  Be sure to check the tush tag to confirm the contents used to stuff the Baby Beans.

Buying Tips

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions - The saying goes that there is no such thing as a stupid question...while that can be debated, don't let it stop you!  If you are not sure, then ask.  eBay makes it easy for buyers to ask the seller a question. Some questions you may have include: Has the doll been repaired?....Is the doll's current home smoking or non-smoking?....Is the doll new, played with, or  just barely hanging on by a thread?
  • Understand Acronyms - Many sellers wrongly presume that all buyers know eBay jargon and abbreviations.  Double check and confirm that your interpretation of an often mind-boggling display of letter groups is accurate before bidding.
  • Search under a variety of keywords - eBay features a neat option allowing an Advanced Search which allows buyers to search titles or the title and description or completed items.  Try mixing up your keywords when searching because not all sellers know exactly what they are selling.  While you might be searching for a 1979 Bare Bottom Booful Doll by Mattel, she could be sitting there all along under 1979 yellow doll or tucked away as a yellow baby doll.  Mix up your search and expand your results. Save your search on your My eBay page and eBay will track your favorites and send you an email when your item is listed.
  • Check eBay Stores - Don't forget to browse through the many stores in the eBay Stores Mattel Dolls center.  There just may be the perfect Baby Beans waiting.  If you cannot find the doll of your dreams, be sure to post your quest in eBay's Want It Now section.
  • Bid Safely and Smartly - Check the seller's feedback rating...are their customers consistently happy with their purchase?  Be sure to check out the return policy....are their products sold "as is" or is "satisfaction guaranteed"?  Remember to consider any shipping costs or handling fees when figuring how much you can bid.  If you win the bid, keep in mind that PayPal lets you pay without giving sellers your credit card number....this is a great (and free!) alternative.
  • Have Fun - Last, but not least....have fun and enjoy the hunt!  With the wonderful variety of dolls available on eBay, it will not be long before you are welcoming a member of the Baby Beans family into your home!
