I have been a collector of Mats Jonasson's glass etching work for many years. At one point my collection had just about 50 pieces. His detail is often immitated but NEVER duplicated. When you receive a piece of glass etching from someone saying that this is a Mats Jonasson piece, here is one tip on how to identify it immediately. THE SIGNATURE! Every single piece of his art work is handsigned on the bottom with his name or "M. Jonasson" and a serial number. If there is nothing written on the bottom, IT'S NOT A JONASSON PIECE! Plain and simple. Many countries sarted producing glass etchings after seeing the huge success M. Jonasson had in the MALERAS company. That's the company he works under. Some are from France "C'rystal", some have a sticker "Made in Poland" and of course, let's not forget good old faithful China. You can ALWAYS count on China in trying to re-produce something.
Look at each piece carefull, his most popular line is the animal series. You will see lots of single hair etched into the glass (if it is an animal with hair of course), this takes lots of time. This is why his art work is highly valued around the globe.
Also there is always a sticker in the front of the piece, the newer ones have the Mats JOnasson logo on it, the older Jonasson pieces were made with the Maleras stickers. Just don't make this sticker a requirement when aquiring a MJ piece, many people do take them off, I don't. So if you think you have an MJ piece, but can't find a sticker on it, just like I said before, look at the bottom engraving.
When you receive a collectors piece, just like with any other collections from other fields, and you get the original box with it. KEEP THE BOX, the value will stay higher.
Here on ebay you can expect the smaller pieces to go (3") betwen $20-$30, sometimes lower even. Be prepared to shell out more for the larger pieces (10"). You can expect paying right around $100+.
At one point Mats Jonasson was also affilliated with Royal Krona, so if it bears the Royal Krona signature on the bottom and his signature ( and possibly numer) you have an authentic piece.
A new line came out a little while ago, where all the glass etchings have been colored afterwards. VERY neat looking and I think I have to get some pieces myself ;o)
