Many programs written for Windows 95 & Windows 98 can be run, or played, in Windows XP even if they do not work at first.  You can make a couple adjustments in Windows XP to try and get these older programs to work.

Many games I've tried still fail but several have worked - and when one works it makes it worth the effort.

Instructions to get older programs to run in Windows XP Professional Edition:

01 > Set up program as usual and click "Finish" (some older programs will want you to restart your computer, fine, restart).
02 > (after restart), Left click the START button and click or hover over All Programs
03 > Find the newly installed program, XYZ for example, and Right click on it to pop up some options.
04 > Left click on Properties in the pop up box
05 > Check to make sure the the START IN box is correct, might have a redundancy in there.
06 > Left click Find Target.  A new box will pop up.
07 > Left click Properties of (newly installed program) XYZ.exe in the new box that pops up.
08 > Left click Compatibility tab
09 > Left click box in front of "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"  (NOTE: other options in this pop up box can be tried if your first try fails).
10 > In the drop down box click Windows 98 / Windows Me, (if this fails you can later go in and try Windows 95)
11 > Click APPLY then click OK.
12 > That box will close and you will now be back to the first box you opened in step 4, Left click APPLY then left click OK
13 > Lucky step 13 is to try and run the program, good luck!

Note the additional properties you can adjust such as RUN IN 256 COLORS could be tried but modern video cards might over-ride these commands.  You would then have to check your video card properties to allow programs to set resolutions.

This is a specific guide for Windows XP but this should work for other Windows operating systems as well.  Dual Core processors can also screw up older programs but there is a way to run a specific program through just one processor.  Use Windows HELP to search for instructions or check out your favorite computer forum.
