Being a girl who loves shoes, and also someone who likes crafts, I decided one day that I would like to learn how to make shoes. Here is what I have found from many hours of online research.

1. If you want to make flat shoes, you are in luck. Outside of ebay, there are various sites where you can buy leather, pre-made (flat) soles, linings, glues, etc. and you can also find patterns online. You might start by making some moccasins. Not only are moccasins cute, but since they are made of mostly natural materials and are commonly made by leatherworkers, it is fairly easy to find the necessary components. Here are some of the ebay categories to check out:

leathercraft search: find leather, hides, and additional supplies
cobbler supply search: find soles, shoe repair supplies, etc.
shoemaking search: find instructional books and videos
shoe form search: find antique shoe forms, used for working on shoes and creating new patterns.
shoe last search: find the wooden forms for making and sizing shoes
replacement sole search: find new soles for your new shoes (or fix your old shoes)
moccasin pattern search: find your first pattern for making cute shoes

Some ebay stores that relate
Leather Craft Supplies: just what the name says, tends more toward native american style leathercraft
Leather Shack & Craft: similar to above
Zelikovitz Shoe Findings: also has leather supplies

2. To make flats, you should find a pattern. With this pattern, you buy some leather for the upper, possibly a leather or other type of material for the lining material, and then cut and assemble these. You may need to sew your shoes, which could require hand sewing or a powerful home sewing machine. Once you have the uppers ready, you buy pre-finished soles and attach them with industrial strength glue. OR you can take them in to a shoe repair shop to have them assemble the parts for you.

3. If you want to make high heels, this is a bit of work. You need to find pre-made soles or you need to get the components to assemble, and as far as I can tell, both of these are pretty difficult for small orders. There are some books for this, both on ebay and also on amazon. But high heels are pretty complicated, so it might be best to buy a pair of cheap shoes in your size and rip them apart to get the heels, or go to a shoe repair shop and ask them for help.

4. There are a couple of shoe-making classes now, and can be found with an internet search. You can also look for instructions on shoemaking, as well as blogs and other crafty communities.

Please let me know if you have any more information about making shoes.
