After I had my first daughter, I needed a way to keep everything covered, so I could nurse and take care of my two year old.  As a stay-at-home mom, I couldn't justify spending a load of money on nursing tops, and also most of them were too short for my fairly long torso.  They were fine if I kept my arms down and didn't move, but as a mom of two that just doesn't happen.  I found that if you buy two shirts (one in your regular size and one a size or two smaller-so it is snug over your tummy) you can make a pretty convenient nursing top.  The bottom one doesn't have to be anything special.  I bought mine for Wal-mart for three or four dollars, I think.  Cut the smaller shirt all the way across, just below the armpits.  Throw away the part with the neck and sleeves.  If you're crafty you can hem the top of the remaining piece, I never did and it didn't unravel.  My plan was to attatch "hooks" to the shirt pieces and "eyes" to my bras, that way I could have several different undershirts, to attatch to any bras.  However, I never found the time to finish the project and in a pinch just tucked that undershirt into the bottom of my nursing bra. I tucked the bottom into my pants, and threw  the shirt I wanted to wear over the top.  I'm glad I tried it because it saved me plenty of money and I was able to nurse so discretely in public, that half the time my husband didn't even notice.  If you buy a variety of colors that match your normal shirts, no one will have a clue that you've got your shirt pulled up.  A lot of nursing tops are made in the same design and most of them have a white underlayer, so you could actually just stock up on white undershirts.   Good Luck and definately give it a try, you don't have to be crafty for this to work!
