Making soy candles with wood wicks is easy and fun to do. Soy wax is easy to work with and cleans up easily. The wood wicks burn nicely and crackle gently, just like a real fire.

General Candle Making

Making a candle is a process of combing wax, dye, fragrance, wick, and container configuration. All of these components can have a dramatic effect on the wax and how the candle performs.

Containers

The recommended size fo the container is 3-4 inches for a medium wood wick, and 4-6 inches for the large wood wick. Containers should be clean and at room temperature.

Melting the Wax

One pound of soy wax flakes is approx. 4 cups. Melt it slowly in the microwave up to about 160 degrees

Color

Add the color dye after the wax is completely melted. Add it slowly until the desired color is achieved.

Fragrance

Add your fragrance oil to the wax at about 125 to 120 degrees. Stir until it is incorporated into the melted wax completely. One ounce of fragrance per pound of soy wax is recommended.

Pouring into Containers

After adding the fragrance, pour into your containers. Save a little bit of wax to top off your candles after placing the wood wick.

Candle Cooling and Wicking

Allow the candles to cool undisturbed and uncovered at room temperature. Allow the candles to cool until there is a thick enough skin to hold the wood wick in place. (usually about 2 hours)

Insert the trimmed end of the wood wick directly into the center of your candle and push down until the wick reaches the bottom of the jar. Melt the extra wax you saved and pour on top of your candle and around the wick. This will fill the space around the wood wick if you moved it a little while placing it.

Keep the wick trimmed to 1/8 th of an inch. Allow to cure for 24 hours.

Place burning instructions labels on the bottom of the container.

The above instructions are only suggestions and your results may vary. Testing and experimenting are the only way to achieve the effects and results you desire. Be sure to follow all safety precautions and directions recommended by the manufacturer of the tools and materials you use.

Clean Up

Clean up is a snap. Just wash your equipment with soap and warm water.

About Wood Wicks

Candles with wood wicks are very unique. They will burn differently than a cotton wicked candle. The wood wicked candle will burn faster and produce more soot. As it burns, it may slightly discolor the wax.
