During the second half of 2007, eBay imposed limitations on the sale of certified coins from certain third party grading services. While the packaging for certified coins may look the same between vendors, the guidelines used for grading coins vary enormously. EBay has designated certain companies as "authorized grading companies." Presumably, these companies provide more consistent coin grading that meets industry expectations. For the rest of the grading companies, limitations are imposed on Sellers for describing those coins in their listings for the benefit of potential Buyers. Indeed, coins slabbed by other services must be treated as "raw" or ungraded when listed on eBay.
