We all live in the same world. We're all subject to the same laws of physics that we're used to.
Things don't float on their own ,or vanish,or turn into something else . It's just not supposed to happen.
But isn't it wonderful when they do?
The Invisible Deck In The Park
This guy (that you've never met before) walks up and proceeds to tell you how before he left the house this morning he took out his deck of cards and without looking, removed one of the cards and turned it the wrong way up in the deck and then put the cards back in the case because he had a feeling and then got this same feeling when he saw you walking towards him. So he asks you to see the card in your mind and then asks you to tell him what it is. Then, with no funny moves, he opens the card case and riffles through the cards and there's the card you named, turned over the wrong way in the deck. Now that's not supposed to happen either, but it does and when it does you have the strange feeling that maybe the world's laws that you've grown so accustomed to maybe aren't as tightly defined as what you once thought they were just a few minutes ago.
And then, when you look around and see people reacting the same way you are, basically asking themselves if reality is really being bent. That's magic. That bent reality feeling washing over you that sort of makes a part of you,a very primal part of you, want to ask the guy if he could make sure it doesn't rain on your birthday this year, if it's not too much trouble.
I believe that people love magic not because it fools them, but because it somehow shows them possibility where there didn't seem to be any before. There may in fact be a different way to look at the world and that everything in it isn't necessarily known, hasn't been explored and perhaps most importantly, can't be taken for granted after all.
