Madame Alexander Collectible Dolls- Madame Alexander
The name Madame Alexander is one of the most important names in collectible dolls. The real Madame Alexander was Beatrice Alexander Behrman, the daughter of a Russian immigrant father who repaired dolls in the doll hospital below where she lived. Although she didn't play with those dolls herself, something about the experience clearly influenced her.
In 1923, she began the Alexander Doll Company with $1600 in borrowed money. Her philosophy was to use the best materials to make the best dolls possible. It was a winning formula and these handcrafted dolls have become avidly collected by their many fans.
There are many different types of Madame Alexander dolls. There are vintage Madame Alexander dolls, couture dolls, dolls based on Hollywood movies like Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz, and Baby Alexander dolls--to name just a few. Those wishing to get involved in collecting Madame Alexander dolls may want to pick a favorite subject area and begin collecting around a theme.
According to the Alexander Doll Company, Madame Alexander dolls should be stored upright on a stand whenever possible. They should of course be protected from sunlight, moisture, and extreme conditions. It may be helpful to keep them in a case so that they are not unduly exposed to dust and the elements.
