I've compiled this small list of some of the finest artists of the period between 1880-1930, known as the Golden Age of Illustration. Much of the work of these artists varied in numerous ways but the common shared thread is they all produced beautifully unmatched art for magazines, advertisements, posters, books, calendars and anything else you can imagine. I'm sure I've omitted many fine artists/illustrators, but this list will serve to familiarize you with many you may have never heard of and even some of their work.
I would encourage anyone who has an interest,
to search as many of these artists as possible and see as much of their work as is available.

William Ladd Taylor, 1854-1926

Born in Grafton Massachusetts, William Ladd Taylor or W.L. Taylor as he was also commonly known, began his career in mechanical drawing and drafting as is evident in many of his painting's compositions with their beautiful rendering of architectural scenes. He studied art in Boston, New York and Paris. The Curtis Publishing Co. - Ladies Home Journal specifically - began using Taylor in 1885 and continued doing so throughout the rest of his career. His career with Curtis was extensive. He began by illustrating stories and poems within the LHJ and after developing an extensive following with the readers his work was featured as main points of interest. Including his series of Illustrations of Longfellows Poems, Early New England Scenes, Scenes from the Old and New Testaments, Scenes from the Old South and Western Frontier all of which featured four to five beautifully executed paintings. In later years most of his creations revolved around biblical scenes.
Known as "The Great American Master of Symbolism" his work was often classical in nature and depicted idyllic beauty rendered masterfully in the Pre-Raphaelite style. He was quite successful commercially but never had to actually go the route of ads, brochures or the more mundane type of work that most illustrators were required to do from necessity. His style and abilities were, for the most part, an instant success and ushered him directly into the mainstream of the artworld.
The first illustaration pictured above, "When I Meditate" is often confused with Maxfield Parrish's "King of the Black Isles" and often for good reason. The general composition is the same - less the second figure- as is the overall color scheme and subject matter. Personally I think Taylor's image is superior and is one of my all time favorites. Taylor died in 1926 while working on an unfinished piece titled "Remember Now Thy Creator in the Days of Thy Youth".
