If you have noticed that the sounds made by your Protosound 2 Locomotive have started to degrade, you may have a speaker problem that could result in damage to the computer board. I have noticed that my early Protosound 2 Subway Cars have experienced a noticeable loss of sound quality. A trip to my local MTH Service Station revealed a problem with the installed speaker that could cause an electrical short resulting in damage to the board. The earlier 5 volt systems seem to be the most effected. If you have noticed such a problem take a look at the speaker and look for flaking around the magnet. If you are not comfortable with disassembling your Locomotive, bring it to an authorized MTH Service Station for inspection. Failure to repair this problem quickly may result in an expensive repair. Hope this helps!

P.S. Make sure to always keep your battery charged, since a low charge condition may also impact the quality of sound made by your locomotive or damage the locomotive electronics.
P.P.S. I have been advised that MTH no longer provides 5 Volt Boards. You will need to install a 3 Volt Board if your 5 Volt Board is damaged. This will require replacement of lighting and other components.
