Mike's Train House has produced a solution to permit the conversion of older Protosound locomotives to Protosound 2.0. There are actually two kits. One for diesel locomotive conversions and one for steam locomotive conversions. The diesel locomotive conversion kit can be used to convert an electric outline locomotive like the GG-1. You can even convert a non-MTH locomotive to Protosound 2.0 if it has a flywheel equipped motor.
The kit is comprehensive containing the new 3 volt circuit board, heat sink, protosound 2 couplers, light emitting diodes and hardware. Plan on reserving a full day for your first conversion. Also pay careful attention to preparation of a static free work area.
If you have built computers in the past and know your way around a multi-meter you should be able to do a conversion. MTH will not warrant the completed conversion, however, unless it is done by an authorized service station.
Cost runs $149.00 to $179.00, the lower price available to members of the MTH Railroaders Club.

N.B. If you are planning on adding any electrically operated features like a camera to your locomotive when you upgrade, remember that the board is powered by 3 volts a.c., so you will need to add a rectifier to provide d.c. current to the device, i.e. 9 volts d.c. for some train cams, or prepare to change 9 volt batteries from time to time.
