I love MMA, and I write about MMA in my blog, it shocks me to hear the number of comments I get from people who don't know what MMA is.  This guide is a simple Q&A that will answer a lot of questions concerning MMA and it's top 2 Organizations.

1. What does MMA stand for? Mixed Martial Arts
2. What is Mixed Martial Arts? A combat sport that features all aspects of combat.  To be successful you must incorporate all types of fighting; Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, etc…
3. What are the rules? Rules vary from each federation and jurisdiction. To find out specific rules it’s best to view the Federations website.
4. How are fights won? Submission, KO, TKO, DQ, No Contest

UFC Specific Questions

1. What does UFC stand for? Ultimate Fighting Championship
2. The UFC was started in what year? 1993
3. What type of structure does the combat take place in? An 8-Sided Octagon, with chain-link fencing surrounding it.
4. Where did the first UFC event take place? Denver, Colorado
5. Who won the original UFC tournament? Royce Gracie
6. When did Zuffa buy the UFC? 2001
7. Who are the main players in Zuffa? Frank and Lorenzo Ferttita and Dana White

9. What does TUF mean? The Ultimate Fighter, it’s a reality show that follows 16 fighters battling their way to a 6-figure contract
10. What TV Station now hosts many UFC events? Spike TV
11. What’s UFN? It’s the Ultimate Fight Night, it’s Free MMA fighting on Spike TV
12. What weight classes does the UFC permit? Lightweight: 146 - 155 lb (66 - 70 kg), Welterweight: 156 - 170 lb (70 - 77 kg), Middleweight: 171 - 185 lb (77 - 84 kg), Light Heavyweight: 186 - 205 lb (84 - 93 kg), Heavyweight: 206 – 265 lb (93 - 120 kg)
