When i first bought my detector, i bought just the basic plain jane detector but some of the things i found were far from plain.  i had started a coin collection and really didnt have the kind of money to just keep buying coin after coin.  so i listened to a friend of mine that sugested that i invest in a metal detector, and so i did.  as of to date i have found 3 morgans, one a carson city, hundreds of silver coins and a few gold and silver rings.  now for all you newbies out there this guide is for you as im sure any experianced detectorhead will probably teach me a few things.  first off your first detector shouldnt be the most expensive, just buy a good detector in the 100 dollar range.  i prefer a bounty hunter to start off with.  you really dont want to get a really expensive one and be overwhelmed with all the whatchamacallits and the doohickeys.  to be quite honest as long as it can detect and has a pretty good discriminator on it, you should be fine.  a digital screen will also be nice.  just remember when you start detecting be smart and study up.  the best place to go is a old highschool, or ballfield that is not currently in use.  or maybe ask locals or older folk where the swimhole was or the hangout spots were back in the day.  that is where you will find the old money.  also check out old churchs, the best place to look at a old church is to find a big old shade tree, just imagine how many folks took a break under that tree in the past.  but remember rules are rules, you always want to follow the code and ask for permission first!!!  dont be scared most folks will let you as long as you dont dig a hole so big you can park a car in it.  always cover your holes back up and always try to leave the way it was before you got there.  just one more rule worth obeying, when you dig up trash and you will, keep it and throw it away in a proper location.  i suggest taking a small bag for things that you dig up but think of it as trash.  the hobby of metal detecting is not just fun and rewarding but also very healthy and addicting.  there;s so many place out there to find old stuff thats worth alot, you never know you may be the one that finds that old mans stash in the woods or that civil war gun or sword.  just use you head, and go to the old parts of town odds are you are not going to find anything at the new park, instead avoid the park and go to the old drive in theatre or to the beach either way have fun and good luck on finding that treasure.
