Born of record-company battles, Laziness and creative breakdowns, the drama surrounds a "LOST" album. Gathering dust in a vault somewhere, That would change music history...??Would Prince and Miles Davies collaboration have blended jazz and pop into a new form that would have supplated hip-hop.....???Would a hardcore psychedelic Beach boys albumhave overtaken Sgt,Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band in the national consciousness ....??? Or would they have been the comtemporary viyl versions of Battlefield Earth..??? In some cases, its impossible to know. Separating fact from Myth , here are 10 of the most hyped musical Non-released events of the last half-century.
The falsified : " no name given "Cd & master cassette ( 2002 ) only one knowen copy is knowen. It is currently in the possesion of a party who wont answer to the founding members. Could this Vinyl have been the break though the band so needed in the later part of 2002. The single " What i am " surely would have been a smash hit. With its Hard driven drums beat and timely introduction of guitar cords. Reviews were out of this world for the single. As one review put it. " I have never been able to forget the tag line.....What i am , what i am is a younger man " going on to say " with a pure talent at drums and a lead guitar player that can feed off each other. As if they are sharing the same musical soul "..............
The Beach Boys , Smile Lp : ( 1966 - 1967 ) Planned as a natural extention of the beach boys masterpiece , pet sounds , Smile is the most legendary album that was never released. In the late 60's Brian Wilson was the only serious rival to the Beatle empire. And pet sounds was Wilsons answer to Revolver , Smile was intended to be the next step foward. Enlisting to super talents of Van Dyke Parks , Wilson planned to create what he called "A teenage symphony to god " Wilson recorded 15 minute version of good vibrations but abandoned it in 1967. Due to the lack of support from the rest of the band and his family. Who called it "general Weirdness " Then came the final blow. With extremly high sale of there record Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. The beatles shoot out of the reach of Wilson and the Beach Boys. For which Wilson never recovered. In late 1967 the band released Smiley Smile a recut and completely different version of the song Wilson had recorded. The future wasnt looking bright for Wilson by the end of 1967. What could have been wilson masterpiece was only the begining of his descent into insanity.
Prince & Miles Davis , Crucial ( 1984 & 1985 ) Why wouldnt a collaboration between these two musicial giants see the light of day..?? Probably because it never happened. According to Alan Leeds, Princes tour manager and vice president of pasley records in the 1980's. He may want to talk to Prince himself before he says any more. In an interview with Spin Magazine prince was quoted as saying " my new record will be out before winter, me and miles have just finished up studio work " Ultimately both miles and prince decided the didnt fit on Miles Davis up coming soon to be released Lp. Nor did it fit the follow up to the purple rain tour work he had already finished. In the Miles Davis Box set you can find one of the songs writen by Prince and Davis. That seems to be the closet we will ever get. The legal battle over who owns the songs. Now that miles has past on. Has only just started. In 2002 Pasley park said there was no studio tapes left. That they could not be found in archives.
The Beastis Boys , Country Mikes Greatest Hits ( 1998 ) The offical story is this : during recording sessions for 1998 HELLO NASTY beastie Boys Mike D hit his head and woke up convinced he was a country singer........( no one is buying that ) The trio then produced an albu,'s worth of country music, unoffically called Country Mikes Greatest Hits. DJ mixmaster Mike swears " They are off the hook " and goes on to say "those guys are just nuts, They had me mixing in roosters and Cow bells and crazy stuff " Later the band changed there story again and said they did it under the advisement of that crazy garth brooks. The history gets even stranger for this release. In late 1998 " Bootleg " copys the band made themself in the studio were given out to family and friends. They were told it was a new band from germany that they would be touring with. Little did the friends and family know that it was actually the beastie Boys. In 2002 the only knowen studio masters vanished from the archive vault. Never to be seen again. Did the band have a part in it. No one knows at this point.
John Phillips & The Rolling Stones With Special Guest's , Half Stoned part 1 of 1 Vinyl master: With neither Mick or the gang speaking up as to the actual dates it is unknowen when they really started this record or when they stopped. It is knowen from log's at the studo that they did start in 1974. Just when is unknowen. On half stoned , Mick Jagger & Co play worlds greatest back up band to John Phillips of the Mamas and the Paps. Conceived by phillips and jagger after a trip to the west indies, the 15 complete tracks were recorded between 1974 and ??? 1990'sPhillips later said " we recorded when ever we could meet up for some fun and some music " It also reunited Jagger and Richards with Mick Taylor who had quite the band in 1974. called the " Lost album or Lost soul album " because phillips who battled substance abuse for much of the 1970's and early 1980's literally kept losing the tapes. one time they even turned up for sale in a second hand store in San Diego Californa for $1.00. the title song " Just 14 "addressed a quickie that Jagger had with phillips then 14 year old daugther Mackenzie. all awhile phillips pounded on the bedroom door. Later they all agreed not to speak about it in the press ever again. Except to say "We all sat down and laughted and had some tea after it "
Neil Young , Homegrowen ( 1972 & 1973 ) the folk hero recorded several albums that were never released. 4 that have been part of a legal battle for almost 25 years. Look no closer to being released in 2005 than they were in 1973. The best knowen is this 1973 effort, a return to thefolkier sound of the early 1972's harvest. Young had recored the darker TONIGHTS the night around the same time. Which can be found on the studio masters of the 2nd record that is in this battle. Recorded again later on. Young wants the orginals to the studio session and the record company. says they are gone. Neither side says they have them. Neither side is willing to back down. So the battle goes on. Will the realy first recording of Homegrowen ever be found...???
Bob Dylan , In Concert ( 1963 ) & ( 1962 ) Columbia records planned to release this album - lost the masters, Then ask Bob to record part of the tracks again. Except they were recorded live at Carnegie hall. This would have been Bob Dylans third Album and his manager, Albert Grossman thought a best of album was unwise so early on in his carreer. The release was later canceled. This is by far one of the most popular Bootlegs even to be made. Tracks 1 though 9 have never been released. The bootlegs are of later concert shows without Joan Beaz singing with him. Only tracks 10 and 11 still are in archive. These two tracks uncut were released on the Bob Dlayn Box set called " Bootleg Series Volume 1 -3. The first 9 tracks of the orginal carnegie hall recordings are belived to be worth over $20,000,000 million plus on todays market.
Macy Gray , " No title given " ( 1996 ) After signing to atlantic in 1996, gray recorded a rock-oriented, guitar-driven album with a ounk-rock producer whom she later said " wasnt very good " when atlantic deemed the finished product a flop the album wasb trashed. She fled L.A for ohio soon after, But her botched sessions caught the ear of musicpublisher Jeff Blue. He coaxed Gray back to L.A in 1997. Where she made another demo for the new lable epic records. By 2000 gray had sold more than six millionalbums and earned two grammy nominations.
U2 , Salome , Salome2, Salome Dance Version, Salome E.P version ( 1992 ) Long rumored to be lost for good, Salome is actually a bootleg of U2's prolific achtung baby sessions. When the band went into the studio to make the album, they had almost no ideas. So they jammed, recorded everything and edited the highlights onto DAT's in april 1991, seven months before Achtung baby release, U2 discovered some of the studio master tapes had been stolen. Since then the tapes have appeared on vinyl and other forms.. The first was a 1991 vinyl only, three lp set called the new U2; rehearsals and full versions. Never to release the record in its complete version. Bono later said " Salome and all its versions cheated fans. because its nothing but Gobbledy-gook" But admiting at the same time he like the edited version of the dance version and admited to buying several copies for friends and family. To this day the tapes have never been found in the uncut orginal version.
