Los Cabos
On the southern Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos incorporates two towns: posh Cabo San Lucas and low-key San José del Cabo. Among the desert terrain and the Sea of Cortés, you’ll find snorkeling, superb golf, nonstop nightlife, and Los Cabos' signature attraction: big-game fishing.
Things To Do!
Water taxis are everywhere in Cabo and willing to negotiate a price. They take you to Lovers Beach and schedule a return pick up at your convenience, or to shopping, a water-accessible restaurant or bar, or your hotel. Most have a glass bottom, and the local driver is friendly. Be willing to get your feet wet if you select this adventure - when you depart, most locations are not along the marina, so you have to be willing to just jump off onto the sandy beach!
We arrived at the parking lot of Plaza Las Glorias on a Saturday morning and received new bandanas and well-worn helmets. After some brief, but useful, directions on the proper handling of the four-wheel-drive All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), we took off single file following our fearless leader through the busy streets of downtown Cabo San Lucas, then through the quieter residential areas, and finally out of town to the sand dunes at the Old Lighthouse, Faro Viejo.
At the entrance to the park, we paid the four-dollar use fee and stopped to admire the junk artistry on display before heading out onto the dunes. There we found acres of sweeping dunes to climb over and specially constructed obstacle courses to test our skills at ATV handling. While there, we learned a lot about the endurance of both man and machine. We also discovered how to get stuck and how to get free.
We were there during June 2003, and witnessed part of the set building for the movie "Troy," starring Brad Pitt and Peter O'Toole. In the distance, we could see the private compound that was built to accommodate the film crew. Both the compound and the movie sets were to be removed after the filming returning the area to its natural state.
After a couple of hours, we rode single-file back to town and turned in our ATVs and helmets, but kept our souvenir bandanas.
Four wheeling in the sand dunes of Baja Mexico was one of the highlights of our trip. We weren't sure what to expect, but we certainly got our money's worth. You start your trip on the streets of Cabo San Lucas and follow your English speaking guide towards the awaiting sand dunes. Once you've accessed the park, you have free reign of the area. You can simply drive your ATV freestyle up and down the dunes or you can follow one of several pre-arranged riding trails.
The whole experience was thrilling, although a little dusty. This is not an excursion for those who can't handle a few smudge marks and a layer of dust on their clothes. You do need to be careful when driving these machines. It is afterall a motorized vehicle and there is limited supervision. If you get yourself stuck somewhere, its up to you to get yourself turned around and back on the right path. I'd recommend riding with a buddy if at all possible. It was a great excursion that still allowed us the rest of the day for ourselves.
Where To Eat.
Mezquite Grill at Casa del Mar
Imagine, perfectly grilled steaks, chicken, or seafood, delivered right to your table on the sand of the beach by the Sea of Cortes. Candles on your table, and a chiminea nearby for added romantic warmth.
The selections available on the menu are outstanding, and the options at the salad and desert bars are equally breathtaking. Simply one of the most special and romantic meals my wife and I have ever shared.

Golf in Los Cabos
Los Cabos, stretching between the two towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, has become a world famous golf destination. With its great year-round weather and challenging courses that take advantage of the natural dessert terrain and spectacular ocean views, it has become one of my favorites.
Each of the three-featured courses has five sets of staggered tee boxes to ensure an exciting game for golfers of all skill levels. Prices vary depending upon season and weather, but for 18 holes, you should expect to pay between and during the winter and between and in summer. Twilight rates, of course, are the lowest. Some hotels offer special rates to their guests at several of the courses. All prices include cart, practice balls & bottled water.
I visited three of these courses -- Cabo Real, Eldorado and Palmilla -- on my January trip, and delighted in teeing off with the warm ocean breezes at my back.
Quick Tips:
Be sure to check with your hotel to see if they offer their guests a discount for a round of golf at any of the courses in the area.
