Longaberger Vitrified Pottery
Many listings describe Longaberger Pottery as high quality, not just because it has the Longaberger name, but because it is vitrified. So, what is vitrified pottery and what makes it better?
Vitreous pottery is non-porous and stronger than typical stoneware. It is made from special raw materials which are subjected to extreme firing temperatures. This process, along with the high quality glaze that is used produces a stronger stoneware, typically found elsewhere. Vitreous pottery is resistant to chipping, cracking, and crazing. It is safe for the dishwasher, oven , microwave and freezer. High quality glazes provide a beautiful yet durable finish that makes clean up a breeze.
Ok... It is safe to put in the dishwasher, oven, microwave and freezer...what should I not do with it?
Never use your Longaberger pottery on Top of the Stove, Under the Broiler, over over an open flame. Avoid making Extreme temperature changes. It is ok to take from the refrigerator and placed into a pre-heated oven, however, if taken from the Freezer put into a cold oven or store in refrigerator overnight before putting in heated oven.
Now for Clean Up.... What is the best way to care for your Longaberger Pottery so that in 10 years, it looks as good as today?
For baked-on foods, allow the piece to soak in hot, soapy water and a non-abrasive scouring pad. Oh and those black or gray marks that show up after using metal utensils....Use a NON-abrasive cleanser, I recommend Bar Keeper's Friend. You may also use Zud. These can be found at your grocery or hardware store. Pfaltzgraff, also makes a great stoneware polish. I use this about 4 times a year to update my shine. You will get small scratches from stacking and everyday use, however, following the steps above, will keep your Longaberger pottery looking great for many years, as it should.
Some of the Longaberger Pottery is made to fit into Longaberger Baskets, can this be done while it is hot?
Pottery that has been heated up to temperature of 400 Degrees F can be safely placed into baskets WITH LINERS. Hot Pottery should NEVER be placed directly in a Plastic Protector.
