First of all, NO, there is NO SURE CURE. So, if you're still reading, here goes. I was diagnosed with panic attacks in 1993, so yes, I feel like a bit of a know-it-all on the subject. I have lived both a life of hell AND a fulfilling life with panic disorder, and let me tell you why -- It's all about ATTITUDE. Oh sure, I spent a full year sitting around moping and wondering "Why me? Why me?" Well, why NOT me? Why not YOU? Or someone you know? After getting over the initial shock that I wasn't crazy, but what I had was a "real" disorder, I then decided to do my best to live with it. But first, I read every single book I could find on the subject of panic (none helped). Finally, I wouldn't exactly say I resigned myself to living with this disorder, but rather I learned how to make it work for me. That is....ok, have you ever seen the movie "Groundhog Day?" Bill Murray repeats the same day over and over again. Of course at first he's good and pissed about the situation, but then he realizes that he now has all the time in the world, so how to put that time to good use? Well, that's pretty much how I viewed my life. I thought to myself, "Hey, what have I always wanted to do, but I never had the time?" Well, I always wanted to learn to paint, so I bought some books on eBay and taught myself how to paint. I now have a fairly nice hobby going (see my current items for sale, some of which are my paintings). I then bought myself some how-to-read-music books (again on eBay -- eBay is GREAT for buying stuff when you're housebound), and yup, you guessed it -- I taught myself how to read music. I then bought myself a violin on eBay and taught myself how to play that. See where I'm going with this? It IS possible to live with this disorder. You just have to learn how to look at the GOOD in it. So hey, if you have panic disorder, here is my advice to you -- Get off the couch and DEAL WITH IT. If you can't leave your house, then go REMODEL your house (another of my passions). If you're having one of those bad panic attacks, hey, go smack a punching bag! (Incredibly therapeutic, I am living proof of this!) All a panic attack is, is pure adrenaline rushing through your body. C'mon, put that adrenaline to good use! You might as well get a good workout while that adrenaline is there, yeah? Ok, I'm not a doctor, but show me a doctor who ever experienced a panic attack, and I'll show you a real person. C'mon, how can someone really help you with PD when they've never experienced it themselves? I know they (the docs) mean well, but if you've never had PD, you don't know jack crap about it. Anyway, I'm living proof that you CAN live a fulfilled life with PD. Still don't believe me? Well, you just watch for me on Oprah one day. I've written 11 books so far (3 about my life with PD), and you WILL hear about me one day. If I didn't have PD, I never would have written 11 books. Heck, I even have an agent!
