"Indigo child" is a term that was popularized by the New age movement. It refers to children who are born with a great level of psychic awareness, strong compassion, keen insight, and very high intellect. It is believed that indigo children are born to help move the world toward a higher, more integral state of consciousness. Because indigo children are so advanced in many ways, they can suffer great frustration if they are not given an open and welcoming environment in which to thrive. They cannot be molded to fit their parents or societies ideas of who they should be and what they should be doing. They come into this world with their own agenda and very strong sense of self. An indigo child is a blessing to every life they touch, and adults have much to learn from their openness, compassion, insight, and humility.
Many people believe that indigo children are incarnating very strongly as part of the current generation of children. Some who study the phenomenon of indigos say that 90% of children under the age of 10 are indigos, and that this is due to the need for the uplifting of consciousness on our earth. Certainly, if you look at the state of the world today you can see that we are in need of a massive shift in consciousness, and I have no doubt that some of these special children are helping to pave the way.
I myself was an indigo child (and now retain the characteristics of the indigo adult). I was always very advanced in reading and writing and I learned to read my first "adult" book before other children my age had learned their alphabet. My psychic ability also developed at a very young age, and like most indigos, I was able to detect the hidden agendas of all of those around me.

In a world that is moving increasingly toward greed and banality, indigos can suffer quite a bit of anguish if they are not blessed with parents who appreciate and respect the unique gifts they have. Indigo children can tend to feel very alienated from mainstream society and American culture. They must be allowed to thrive, explore their creativity, and express their thoughts and hopes, however utopian they may seem. While the teenage years are difficult for all of us, they can be especially difficult for indigo children. Many indigos suffer terrible depression and suicidal and self-destructive behavior in their teenage years. They can tend to feel "outside of" or separate from most of the world, and the teen years can exacerbate this sense of otherness. Their emotional sensitivity can also be greatly heightened as they go through physical hormonal changes. Many indigos will also embrace alternate forms of sexuality, or express themselves as transgendered from a very young age. If an indigo child is born into a very conservative/ignorant family, it can make their lives very difficult. Instead of thriving and blooming all of the gifts they have, they will grow depressed and feel further isolated from society.
If you have been granted the great blessing of an indigo child, the best thing you can do is give them the space to express themselves as much as possible. Do not try to control or bend their will, because it will only cause hostility. Instead, give them the tools to be who they want to be--the artists, dreamers, intuitives, change-bringers, compassionate souls, unique beings, and magick makers of this world.
