- A Line Lamp
- the type of incandescent lamp that is generally used in most indoor residential lighting applications.
- Accent Lamp
- Portable lamp that usually has a shade from 9" to 14" wide and height no taller than 24".
- Adjustable Lamp
- Portable lamp that has an adjustable height or width or shade position.
- Alabaster
- a very fine variety of gypsum (hydrous calcium sulfate) found in nature. It is translucent and its color is often white, pearly, or silky colorless but it sometimes has subtle reddish-brown bands running through it. It is often used for decorative objects such as light fixtures or figurines.
- Ambient
- Ambient light, also known as "general light", is an overall level of lighting in your room. Ambient light should provide a comfortable amount of light to suit how the room is used.
- Amperes (Amps)
- A measure of electrical current.
- Bankers Lamp
- Portable desk lamp with an oblong shade that is usually adjustable.
- Baffle Reflector
- A device, which reflects, light downward and diffuses light upward to reduce glare. Generally used on shades with large top diameters.
- Ballast
- an electrical device used with fluorescent or HID lamps to supply sufficient voltage to start and operate the lamp but then to limit the current during operation.
- Base
- Stabilizing body of a lamp constructed from various materials such as metal, brass, porcelain, resin or wood.
- Base Switch
- Found on the base of a lamp, base switches add convenience when turning the lamp on/off.
- Beam Spread
- a measure of the spread of light from a reflectorized light source, a special-shaped lamp with a reflective coating inside the bulb to direct the light forward. The beam spread may be very narrow (narrow spot), very wide (wide flood), or something in-between (narrow flood, for example). Examples of "reflectorized light sources" are MR11, MR16, PAR20, PAR30, PAR38, R40, ER30, and BR30 lamps.
- Beveled Glass
- Clear glass, with edges that have been ground and polished to an angle other than 90 degrees.
- Billiard or Oblong Pendant
- Rectangular or oval shaped shade that is typically suited for suspension over a billiard table, kitchen island or counter.
- Boudoir Lamp
- A lamp suited for the bedroom.
- Bridge Arm Lamp
- Table or floor lamp with an arm supporting a single shade.
- Buffet Lamp/Candlestick
- Portable lamp, usually tall and slender and suitable for use on a buffet, with height generally no taller that 36".
- Cable Lighting System
- a low voltage lighting system where the mechanism holding the light fixtures and conducting electricity to those fixtures is a pair of cables.
- Canopy
- The part of a fixture that mounts to the ceiling or wall and covers the junction box to which the fixture attaches.
- Cathedral Glass
- Transparent single color sheet glass, with smooth or textured surfaces.
- Cathode
- an electrode that emits electrons. A fluorescent lamp cathode emits or discharges electrons to the cathode at the other end of the lamp.
- Center Beam Candle power (CBCP)
- A lamp's ability to render an object's true colors based on a scale of 100.
- Chandelier
- Surface mounted ceiling fixture with lighted arms.
- Color Temperature
- A numerical measurement of the color appearance of a light source measured in degrees Kelvin (K). It also refers to the way color groups are perceived (psychological impact of lighting) with "warm" colors at the red / orange / yellow end of the spectrum and "cool" at the blue end.
- Compact Fluorescent
- Small fluorescent bulbs which often can be used in a standard medium-base socket. CFL's use 20-40% less electricity than incandescent bulbs and are color adjusted to produce light close to real sunlight.
- Cornice Lighting
- a lighting system comprised of light sources shielded by a panel parallel to the wall and attached to the ceiling and distributing light over the wall.
- Copperfoil
- Narrow strips of copper tape used to wrap the edges of glass pieces that have been cut to fit a pattern. When wrapped, solder is applied, bonding the glass pieces together.
- Cove Lighting
- a lighting system comprised of light sources shielded by a ledge or recess, and distributing light over the ceiling and possibly the upper part of the wall.
- Desk Lamp
- Portable lamp, usually with a downward task light. Light source should be about 15" above work area.
- Dimmer Switch
- Gradually increases/decreases light intensity. Most torchieres are equipped with dimmers or high/low switches.
- Direct Current (DC)
- electric current without alterations. DC current is usually supplied by a battery, a transformer, or photovoltaic cells.
- Drum Style Shade
- Like a cylinder, the diameter of a drum shade is the same at top and bottom.
- Down Lighting
- small light fixture recessed into the ceiling that usually concentrates the light in a downward direction. Synonyms: recessed downlight, “can”, recessed can.
- Efficacy
- a measure used to compare light output to energy consumption. Efficacy is measured in lumens per watt. A 100-watt light source producing 1750 lumens of light has an efficacy (efficiency) of 17.5 lumens per watt.
- Etched Glass
- The use of hydrofluoric acid or sand blasting to create a matte finish or a specific design on glass.
- Fan Light
- A glass shade that can be used on a ceiling fan.
- Faux
- Fake. Refers to finishes and materials, such as faux marble.
- Filament
- a tungsten wire that incandesces or lights up when an electric current runs through it.
- Finial
- Decorative detail on the top of a lamp or the very bottom of a chandelier.
- Finish
- The decorative color of hardware achieved by painting or plating base or fixture materials.
- Fireplace Screen
- Decorative screen that covers the opening of a fireplace while not in use.
- Firescreen
- Functional fireproof screen that covers the opening of a fireplace while in use.
- Fitter
- Within the top diameter of a shade, three prongs meet in a center ring where the shade fits to the harp. Also known as "Spider".
- Fixture
- Complete lighting unit usually consisting of socket, housing, shade, and connection to electrical power.
- Floor Lamp
- Portable lamp with a shade that directs light downward and a height usually taller than 48".
- Fluorescent
- Energy efficient bulbs, using 20-40% less electricity than standard incandescent bulbs.
- Flushmount
- Surface mounted ceiling fixture with three inches or less between the shade and the ceiling.
- Fluting
- Deliberate vertical lines as a conscious part of design. Fluting was first found in Greek and Roman columns
- Foot Candles
- a. the amount of light reaching a subject. The commonly United States unit of measurement of lighting level (illumination) is the foot-candle (fc). The international unit of measurement of lighting level (Illumination) is the lux (lx). The relationship between the lux and the foot-candle is 1 fc = 10.76 lux.
- Glass Jewel
- Piece of hot glass that is press-molded into a jewel like shape.
- Glue Chip
- Glass Texture created on the surface of glass by applying hot glue, which after drying contracts and chips the glass surface resulting in a natural pattern, like frost on a window pane.
- Granite
- Glass A texture with the appearance of granite that is applied to hot glass sheets with an embossed roller.
- Halogen
- Small, hot-burning bulbs, often used for task or accent lighting. Halogen bulbs have a longer life and provide more light per watt.
- Hand Rubbed
- Process of hand rubbing to achieve a desired finish.
- Hard Back Shade
- A shade made with a paper or vinyl lining.
- Hardware
- Any component that supports the shade and or socket.
- Hardwire Lighting
- Fixtures wired directly to the buildings electrical system rather than plugged into the wall socket. These include overhead, bathroom, wall sconces and track and recessed lighting.
- Harp
- Brass finished hardware used to secure a lampshade to the base. Harps vary in size depending on the shade depth, usually 8", 10", or 12".
- Hurricane Lamp
- Decorative lamp with a cylindrical glass shade. Original hurricane lamps were used with candles or kerosene and the glass cylinder prevented the candle from being blown out by "hurricane" winds. Hurricane lamps are now equipped with electric light bulbs.
- Incandescent
- Standard bulbs, generally from 15-150 watts. These "screw-in" type bulbs provide a warm, yellowish light that offers a cozy soft glow to a room.
- Inverted Pendant
- Chain hung ceiling fixture with open end of shade facing toward the ceiling.
- Iridescent Glass
- Glass with a colorful shimmering effect created when a layer of metallic oxide is bonded to hot glass.
- Island Pendant
- Ceiling fixture usually multishaded, horizontally hung and generally best suited for a kitchen island or billiard table.
- Jadestone
- Durable, compact thinly cut stone with luminous color that can be shaped and constructed with the copperfoil technique
- Lumens
- A measure of luminous flux or quantity of light emitted by a source.
- Luminous Efficacy
- The light output (lumens) of a light source divided by the total power input (watts) to that source. It is expressed in lumens per watt.
- Lux
- A unit of illuminance or light falling onto a surface. One lux is equal to one lumen per square meter.
- Maximum Overall Length
- The end-to-end measurement of a lamp, expressed in inches or millimeters.
- Mica
- A natural mineral bonded with shellac to create a light diffuser, usually available in Silver or Amber colors.
- Micro Mini Lamp
- Portable table lamp that usually has a shade 4" or smaller and height no taller than 6".
- Mini Lamp
- Portable table lamp that generally has a shade of 4" to 8" wide and height usually no taller than 15".
- Mini Pendant
- Surface mounted one light fixture consisting of a single pole or chain, extending from the ceiling canopy with shade no larger than 10" in diameter.
- Mini Window
- Lighted miniature tabletop glass window suspended from a frame.
- Mission
- An early 20th century American offshoot of the Arts and Crafts Movement, furniture was called "mission" because it had a "utility of design" or Mission. Mission furniture had a simple, rectilinear style with exposed construction techniques, unpretentious materials (usually oak, with coverings of leather, canvas or plain cloth) and little or no decoration.
- Night Light
- Small portable light that plugs directly into an electrical outlet.
- Opalescent Glass
- Glass that incorporates white, or opal glass, into the color mix.
- Patina
- Coloration of metal finish due to aging or from a solution applied to metal to change its color.
- Pendalog
- Element that hangs from a shade, base or hardware, usually crystal but can be made of various materials.
- Pendant
- Ceiling fixture that usually features a shade larger than 10" in diameter. suspended by a single pole or chain extending from the ceiling canopy.
- Pharmacy Lamp
- Generally used for reading, the pharmacy can be adjusted to a comfortable height according to reading level. The metal or glass shade, usually in a tent or shell shape, swivels for direct lighting.
- Phosphor
- An inorganic chemical compound processed into a powder and deposited on the inner glass surface of fluorescent tubes, CFL's and some mercury and metal-halide lamp bulbs.
- Rated Lamp Life
- The length of time of a statistically large sample between first use and the point when 50% of lamps died.
- Reverse Painted Glass
- Paints are applied to the underside of glass, starting with the foreground and ending with the background.
- Ripple Glass
- Texture that has the appearance of ripples that is applied to hot glass sheets with an embossed roller.
- Pleat
- A straight, flat vertical fold of cloth, common on lampshades. Soft pleats are gentle and "wavy". Hard or "knife" pleats have sharp, defined edges like a serrated knife blade.
- Portable Lighting
- Light fixtures that can be plugged-in to a wall socket, and that are easily moved. (i.e. Lamps)
- Sconce
- Typically, a one or two light fixture surface mounted to a wall.
- Sculpture
- A lighted or unlighted decorative tabletop accessory.
- Seedy Glass
- Glass which contains trapped air bubbles, created with air or gas injected into the molten glass, prior to forming the sheet.
- Semi Flush
- Surface mounted ceiling fixture with three inches or more between the shade and the ceiling.
- Shower
- Fixture with a ceiling pan that usually suspends 3 or more pendants.
- Six Way Floor Lamp
- A 3-way "mogul" bulb surrounded by three additional bulbs allows six different lighting levels. Reaching a maximum of up to 600 watts, this variation of the club floor lamp can light large areas.
- Socket
- Electrical connector into which the bulb is screwed, usually having a switch located at its base. Most lamps are equipped with 3-way standard sockets. Never exceed the maximum wattage, generally shown on the socket.
- Soft Shade
- A shade made with a fabric inner lining and outer material. Soft shades create an elegant look.
- Stained or Art Glass
- Colored glass.
- Swag
- Pendant or chandelier with chain and wire that can drape across a ceiling to reach a hard mounted electrical box or plug into an electrical outlet. A swag is generally called a festoon.
- Table Lamp
- Portable lamp usually with a shade having a 14” width or larger.
- Task Lamp
- Used to illuminate the area where a visual activity like reading, sewing or preparing food occurs.
- Tiffany
- A - Style referring to Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Victorian or scenes of nature.
- B - The copperfoil technique of stained glass assembly.
- C - Opalescent glass invented by Louis Comfort Tiffany 1848-1933, son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, an American jeweler.
- Torchiere
- Portable floor lamp with a shade that directs light upward.
- Torchette
- An accent table lamp that directs light upward.
- Translucent Glass
- Glass that allows light transmission while diffusing. Objects cannot be seen clearly through this glass.
- Tray Table Floor Lamp
- A club floor with the addition of a glass or wood tray which serves as an occasional table.
- Twin Pull Desk Lamp
- Convenient and decorative pulls allow for easy on/off of one or both bulbs. Well-suited for bedside lighting.
- Turtleback
- Molded glass tiles that are usually irregular in shape and thickness.
- Vanity
- Surface mounted wall fixture with three or more lights, usually used in the bathroom.
- Voltage
- A measurement of the electromotive force in an electrical circuit or device expressed in volts.
- Washed
- Process of lightly applying an accent finish by hand.
- Wispy Glass
- Mixed opalescent glass with thin wisps of white or clear glass
- Wattage
- A unit of electrical power. Lamps are rated in watts to indicate the rate at which they consume energy.
