Note: Weight and dimensions for models within the same series, i.e. the
Toshiba M65 series will generally be the same. Weights vary depending on
configuration of optical drives, and longer life batteries. A 9-cell or
larger battery may add 0.3 to 1 pound.

In general, a laptop weighing under 7.5 pounds with a height of less
1.5" or less is idea for this price and weight range.  If possible, avoid
weights over 8 pounds and heights over 2 inches unless you rarely
carry it around.

Among the major brand names, both Sony and HP did not have any laptops
that met the weight and price criteria.  The best bang for the buck for most
users will be the Averatec 7100 Series and the Toshiba P105 and M65 family
of laptops
