Ok so this is the newest craze and everyone's looking for a shortcut to that super cool HID look found only on high end luxury cars such as BMW & Lexus without spending hundreds on HID kits and all the fuss that goes with installing them. Lets start first by discussing the true HID non incandescent high intensity discharge headlights. HID technology addressed the problem of the incandescent headlight's low efficiency by doing away with incandescence completely. The idea of HID headlights came from large area lighting like the lighting in stadiums. Unlike conventional halogen headlights HID produces light by throwing a voltage arc into a special gas called Xenon , often HID headlights are refered to as Xenon headlights. The Xenon gas reacts to the charge by producing light. Because its not an incandescent design the electrical efficiency is more than three times that of conventional headlights. With no filament the headlight operates much cooler and failures are much less frequent and the HID headlight produces up to three times as much light with a white crisper light than the conventional halogen headlights. The most popular HID lighting system is the 4300K which produces a bright pure white light with a slight purple hue. Ok lets talk about the headlight bulbs you see pictured above. E Bay Motors is absolutely flooded with these Colored headlight bulbs today. Most of them are what’s called HID headlight emulators. These colored fake HID lights are merely conventional halogen bulbs with a colored tint added to the glass in an attempt to produce the desired color. Sellers claim these bulbs give you that HID look and provide more visibility , this is a joke right LOL. Basically the color tint thats added to the glass bulb blocks the yellow in the bulb's light supposedly producing the purpleish white HID look ( so they claim ) but lets not forget that the major color in the incandescent halogen headlight is yellow , so with the tint added to the bulb thus taking the yellow out of the spectrum , it actually reduces light output causing less light to reach the road, so to sum it all up the light output is actually less brighter than standard halogen headlights. I'm speaking from experience , my brother in law purchased a set of these bulbs from a E bay seller , the bulbs were called Euro Dezigns. When we installed them in his SUV they weren't as purple as the seller claimed , and in my opinion on these dark rural roads here they would be dangerously dim. So we ended up taking them out and putting the stock bulbs back in. So to sum it all up, there are no shortcuts , the only way to get the true HID look is by purchasing a HID kit and HAVE IT PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED. I recently had a 4300K HID headlight system installed in my 2008 Jeep Liberty at the dealership where I purchased it and the final bill including labor was $746.00. The mechanic advised me that these $100.00 plug and play HID Kits you see all over E bay motors and the rest of the internet are knockoffs , most of them are manufactured in Asia and you could potentially damage your electrical system using them. The true Euro HID kits like the one I purchased for the Jeep start at around $450.00. Properly installing the system requires changing out the entire headlight power harness , special headlight projection housings ( All Included In Kit ) and need to be professionally installed. Now I just hope what they said about bulb life is true and a bulb doesn't blow out anytime soon because a replacement bulb for my system cost around $200.00 Maybe I should have stuck with halogens , and if you don't have $746.00 to spend on having A TRUE EURO HID KIT installed I suggest you do exactially that. But if you decide that I'm full of bologna and go with one of the cheap plug & play systems I wish you Good Luck , because if you install the wrong kit you may end up spending as much as I did , only on repairs to your electrical system.
