This is a quick guide on what ounce weights mean concerning leather hides.
Most listings have a referance to the ounce weight of a hide. This tells you how thick the hide may be, however, for those of us that can't determine if 3.5oz is realy what we are looking for, here is a quick conversion table:
Keep in mind that hides are never the same thickness in every spot, but the ounce weight is more of an average. Don't let this dissuade you though, it still gives a very good indication of the overall thickness.
Ounce weight can also be used to give you an overall idea of how heavy the entire hide may be, the ounce weight is how many ounces per square foot a hide weighs. For Example, if you have a hide that is 10 square feet, and it is 2oz weight:
10ft * 2oz = 10oz total weight
Once again, this will not be exact, but will be very close.
I hope this helps answer some of your questions concerning ounce weights and leather hides.
