Having trouble planting grass and getting it to stay? There is one good method that I used to make a great green yard. The idea is to replace the grass by transplanting it from an area where there is alot of growth such as somehwere that is not going to be noticed or missed and it can grow back and this part is easy. This is so easy to do just take a good solid shovel and if the ground is hard soften it some with a good soaking. Now remove a good scoop and make sure it is a scoop roots and all and deep enough that it still holds to the soil. Now get this part which is just plant it by digging a sizable area about the same as your fresh chunk of grass with soil roots and all and then plant it and fill any extra area with leftover soil from the dig. Firmly pack it in with your shovel and water it well for the first couple of days and thereafter while taking care that it is making it o.k. and you will end up with a good patch that will usually grow well there. Make quite a few for whatever your needs may be and watch it grow. It may take a little time and you can even use just enough to cover spots and you would be in fact most likely surprised at the growth and it will spread well.
Good luck there,
Marc W.
