Laptop Care - Notebooks   What Manufacturers NEVER tell you! KEEP it COOL

  • Manufacturers Rarely (if ever) offer advise on the prevention of damage to a laptop
  • Nor do they provide Cautionary statements about a notebooks misuse.
  • Why with such an expensive piece of equipment is it a secret?
  1. While they do say the laptop should be operated on a hard surface, many people do not realize a lap bed or couch is NOT a hard surface. If you look at the bottom of a laptop you may very well find ventilation openings, and yes this is where the fans reside. By blocking these with you leg couch or bedspread. You are effectively choking you computers cooling system which will affect it's longevity. You would not put a pillow in front of your cars radiator So why block the free air flow of the notebook.
  2. Take a minute to think about how LCD screens are made and it will become apparent why they need added protection. The glass is less than 1/4 inch from the top. Tops are the weakest point.
  3. Impact damage happens when you put an AC adapter in the front compartment which if you bump something will create a great amount of force on the top which transmits to the screen
  4.  The Original Compaq (lunch boxes) had much better protection from impact than any of to-days computers (excepting ruggedized models like the tough book) Which are hardly affordable to the average consumer. So be a little cautious and prevent an accident BEFORE it happens,

Fans unless powered externally are not better at cooling than free air and inclined cooling                 Even the little feet thingies, books or boards are no match for a properly designed incline cooler.       Such as the lapkitty I make. Nor do they protect the screen.

Actual test results Fan cooling vs Non Fan cooling excerpted from Crave Mar 22, 2007

"We looked at a total of eight cooling options, rating each for its design, utility, and capability to keep laptop temperatures down. To test the thermal properties, we ran our grueling Multimedia multitasking test on a sample laptop--the popular Lenovo T60p--recorded the CPU temperature for each product, and compared it to the laptop's CPU temperature without any cooling assistance."

If this helps at all Please rate it thanks      lapkitt
