Lance Burton is one of the most famous Magicians in the world, with a collectible autograph that is growing in popularity every year.  I've been collecting magic autographs more than thirty years.

Lance is one of my favorites.  Here's five reasons why I like collecting his autograph:

  1. Lance is one of the best Magicians in the world, proving himself in competition by winning the FISM World Championships
  2. His future is a positive, because he is anchored in a $100 million contract with the Monte Carlo
  3. He is great about signing autographs, in-person, through the mails and for charities
  4. His autograph is easy to find on eBay, available almost every day as an auction item or a buy-it-now item
  5. His autograph is reasonably priced, making it available to collectors (like myself) with modest budgets

Here's a few general things I have learned about Lance Burton's autograph, after studying it since 1991, talking to other collectors, and acquiring several examples.

Availability

Lance's autograph is almost always for sale on eBay.  This type of material is often listed in the category of  Buy > Collectibles > Fantasy, Mythical & Magic > Magic.  You can also do Buy category searches using phrases such as "Lance Burton autograph", "Lance Burton autographed", "Lance Burton signature" and "Lance Burton signed".

The funnest way to get Lance Burton's autograph is from the man.  Go to Las Vegas and see his show at the Monte Carlo!  Buy his merchandise.  And after the show, you can get him to autograph it.  I've seen his show and it's incredible.  It's well worth the money.  Sometimes you can buy tickets on eBay, but during a recent search, I didn't see any Lance Burton tickets.  No matter.  You can still buy lots of cool things on eBay to facilitate your travel and stay in Las Vegas.

Here's how I got my first Lance Burton's autograph.  I wrote him a fan letter and asked him!  It was that simple.  I sent him a letter and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.  Guess what?  He responded with the autographed photo that appears above.  This is the same kind of autographed photo you see selling on eBay!

Range of Material

Lance Burton's autograph is usually on a signed photo, and more specifically, an 8" x 10" black and white photo of him holding a deck of flaming cards (see above).  I have also seen his autograph for sale on color photos, show programs, typed letters, first day covers, index cards and playing cards.

I can't ever recall seeing his autograph for sale on a magazine cover, a book, a handwritten letter, a check, a contract, a magic kit, a DVD, a video, an original work of art, a magic trick or a baseball.  Perhaps these items exist, but I think they're scarce.

I have never seen a fake Lance Burton autograph, such as an autopen, preprinted photo or stamped signature.  Nor have I seen forgeries.  That gives me some measure of confidence in his material.  But I'm still going to keep looking!

Autograph Examples

Here's some autographs of Lance Burton I have purchased on eBay.  The signature below was on a 3" x 5" white index card.  I purchased it in auction on Jan. 22, 2005, for $1.49 plus $2.00 shipping from eBay seller milltraders.  I was the only person to bid on this item, although there were 21 page views.

The signed photo below was purchased in auction on Nov. 26, 2004, for $5.00 plus $3.95 shipping from eBay seller glamourpics.  There was one bid.

The signed photo below was purchased in auction on Nov. 22, 2004, for $2.25 plus $3.00 shipping from eBay seller lauriumphoto.  There were two bids.

The signed photo below was purchased in auction on Nov. 29, 2004, for $5.99 plus $3.95 shipping from eBay seller wamco. There was one bid

Here's a few other prices I've paid:

  • Nov. 27, 2004, purchased a signed black and white photo for $0.99 plus $3.99 shipping from eBay seller seesports4ever, with one bid
  • Mar. 23, 2006, purchased a signed poster and a signed program (see first photo on this Guide) for $25.01 plus shipping from eBay seller eschreiter, with nine bids
  • July 30, 2006, purchased a signed first day cover honoring W.C. Fields, postmarked Jan. 29, 1980, for $4.00 plus $2.00 shipping from eBay seller bigdon45, with one bid

I think prices will continue to creep upwards, as more people discover Lance Burton and his cool magic.  What are your experiences?  Let me know, and I'll try to keep this Guide updated for all.
