Before you begin to decorate your lace applique, steam press the piece on the reverse side to make it easier to work with.

Trace a copy of your applique on a sheet of paper to try out different color combinations before you actually begin to work on the lace.  If you plan to mix colors, test on a scrap piece of paper to be sure you are happy with them.

APPLYING COLOR

Apply color to the shiny side of the applique.  Choose from fabric paints in your favorite craft store.  Then follow the manufacturer's instructions and directions to get the best results.

Different fabric paints will give many different effects.  Some have a flat finish; others will "bead". Some contain glitter--it is best to apply glitter paint in a thin coat.

When working on a large area with a single color, start at the center and work toward the edges.

Most fabric paints have a very intense color.  You may need to add plenty of white to tone down the color.  Use plenty of water to keep the paint thin.

You may use fabric markers to add color to your appliques.  Follow the manufacturer's instructions and practice on a piece of scrap fabric before applying colors to the applique.

Special effects can be achieved by using a very small brush.  Dampen the brush with water and you will be able to tone, shade or mix colors.  You can go from yellow to orange to red, or let colors overlap.

If you want one uniform color, this can be done with fabric dye.  Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions and practice on a scrap piece of cloth.

TO ATTACH

Attaching your lace applique to fabric is best done by hand sewing with a clear invisible thread.

There are many fine fabric glues that can be used to affix you finished applique to baskets, boxes, or other craft projects.

TO CLEAN

Follow paint or marker manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning or laundering.
