LAMB CHOP is a fictional character, more precisely a fictional sheep who was originally a sock puppet created by ventriloquist Shari Lewis. Lamb Chop first appeared with Lewis on the children's morning television show Captain Kangaroo. Lamb Chop could perhaps be described as a 6-year-old girl, very intuitive and very feisty, a combination of obstinacy and vulnerability! You know the saying, fools rush in where wise men fear to go? Well, Lamb Chop would rush in, then scream for help!
During the 1960's, Lewis had her own musical comedy network television show. After children's programming turned to animation, she continued to perform in a wide range of venues. In 1992, Lamb Chop and Shari began their own PBS children's show, Lamb Chop's Play Along, an Emmy Award winning show for 5 consecutive years. The show encouraged kids to participate in fun-filled games while teaching moral lessons through song and dance. Self esteem comes from doing something and accomplishing something. It doesn't come from watching TV. I try to do activities and I try to turn TV into an activity, Lewis once said.
Shari Lewis was also a gifted singer, dancer, writer, ventriloquist and musician. She wrote over 30 books, sold thousands of videos and won 12 Emmys. But many say she was also something more: Shari Lewis cared about quality television, and she always cared about the kids.
Sadly Lewis passed away in 1998. But two years later, her daughter, producer and writer Mallory Lewis Tarcher decided that Lamb Chop should live on for her many fans. Mallory worked closely with her mother when producing her PBS show and wanted her memory to live on in Lamb Chop. When my Mom died, it was either over, or I had to try, and Lamb Chop didn't want to die. A little voice pipes up from Tarcher's elbow, I was in the closet for a year you know, it says. But now, I'm baaaaaack.
