Winnie the Pooh was created by A.A. Milne. Winnie the Pooh is the star of the novels entitled "Winnie-the-Pooh (1926)", and "The House at Pooh Corner" (1928). Because of his popularity, the character was later adapted into a series of short films and a television show by the Disney Channel. Disney purchased the rights to Winnie the Pooh and produced the first television series in 1961. It is believed that the character of Pooh was based on a stuffed bear that Christopher Robin Milne, the author's son, had received on his first birthday. Christopher Robin Milne is also the namesake of Pooh's best friend, Christopher Robin.
Winnie the Pooh lives in the Hundred-Acre Wood along with Rabbit, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, and Roo. The only human character depicted in the Pooh franchise is Christopher Robin. Winnie is a sweet bear that loves honey and often has a craving for it when he hears a "rumbly in his tumbly". Many of his adventures take place while he is in search of "hunny" and while helping out the many other residents of the Hundred-Acre Wood.
Winnie the Pooh is also the inventor of the game, "pooh sticks" in which opponents drop sticks in a stream and watch to see whose stick crosses the finish line first. The first film version of Pooh was released in 1977: The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Other Disney films based on Pooh were released in 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2005. There were also several other television shows about Pooh. The first live action Winnie the Pooh-based show aired from 1983-1995 and was called "Welcome to Pooh Corner." Disney also released an animated show called "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh," that aired from 1988-1991 on ABC.
Trivia : Disney's animation of Pooh was based on the Agnes Brush version of Winnie the Pooh that was sold in the 1940"s and 1950's.
