Sesame Street is a television show designed to educate preschool-age children so that they are better prepared for school.  It has been on television for 36 years and has over 4,000 episodes.  The show first aired in 1969 and continues to this day.  The show has many human and puppet characters including: Big Bird, Snuffleupagus, Oscar the Grouch, Bert and Ernie, Elmo, Count von Count, The Cookie Monster, Grover and Kermit the Frog.  Sesame Street is divided up into many sections and each have their own valuable educational information to offer including: number of the day, letter of the day, and Elmos world.

Big Bird : an 8-foot tall golden condor, Big Bird lives just off 123 Sesame Street in a giant nest.  Big Bird has many talents; he can roller skate, dance, sing, and even write poetry.  He has a teddy bear named Radar.  Big Bird is described as being six years old and encourages children by explaining that it's okay if they don't know everything because he himself doesn't know everything, and also, to ask a grown-up if they have a question. Big Bird starred in his own movie in "Sesame Street present Follow that Bird" in 1985 and "Big Bird in Japan" in 1991.

Snuffleupagus :  Mr. Aloysius "Snuffy" Snuffleupagus was originally thought to be an imaginary friend to Big Bird, but that was simply because Snuffy would leave just before anyone else would arrive.  Snuffy has a baby sister named Alice.  He's a big furry brown Muppet who looks like an elephant with lots of hair.  Everyone finally discovered that Snuffy was real in November of 1985 and he continues to star in Sesame Street today.

Oscar the Grouch : Oscar is a green Muppet that lives in a trash can on Sesame Street.  He's usually very grouchy and his favorite thing in the world is trash.  Oscar has never been seen outside of his trash can on Sesame Street, however, he's been able to ice skate through the hole in the bottom, as evidenced by Christmas Eve on Sesame Street (1978).  Oscar has an orange pet worm named Slimy as well as a pet elephant named Fluffy.

Bert & Ernie : Bert & Ernie are two Muppets who live on in the basement of 123 Sesame Street.  They are roommates and one head up one section of the show while they perform skits.  Bert is the grumpy character of the pair and was originally performed by Frank Oz, the voice of Miss Piggy and Yoda from the Star Wars movie series.  Bert always gets irritated by Ernie's crazy ideas and usually loses his temper with Ernie.
Ernie:  Ernie is the comic relief of the pair and is widely known for his "Rubber Duckie" song and his fondness of baths.  He's also notable for coming up with some crazy idea while Bert tries to talk him out of it.

Elmo :  Elmo is a red Muppet that hosts the last segment on each Sesame Street episode called "Elmo's world."  The character is supposedly three years old and constantly refers to himself in the third person.  Over the years, Elmo has had several different dolls created in his likeness, including "Tickle-Me-Elmo," which became a pop-culture sensation in 1996.

Count von Count :  the Count is a purple vampire Muppet that lives in a spooky castle on Sesame Street.  He is most notable for his voracious love of counting and will count anything and everything, no matter the size or number.  The Count first appeared on Sesame Street in 1972 and has made appearances in several of the Sesame Street movies.  He has a full segment on Sesame Street where he teaches the number of the day.

The Cookie Monster : The cookie monster is a blue Muppet who lives on Sesame Street.  He has an unstoppable appetite for cookies and eats them every chance he gets.  Cookie Monster was first performed by Frank Oz and has hosted several segments on Sesame Street, including "Monsterpiece Theater", and beginning in 2000, the letter of the day segment.  Cookie Monster has even appeared on an episode of Martha Stewart Living.

Trivia : The show has been aired in over 120 countries and has been awarded more than 100 Emmy awards.
