G.I. Joe was first seen in 1964 as an action figure produced by Hasbro. The original character's name was based on a film from 1945 called The Story of G.I. Joe, a film about a war correspondent in World War II. After the first figure, however, Hasbro began producing other action figures based on many different branches of the armed forces. The main theme of the G.I. Joe characters was good vs. evil. The G.I. Joe characters appeared in comics and cartoons and continue to be one of the best-selling action figures to this day.
