Do not bid on any Knoppix CDs or what some sellers call Windows recovery CDs. Knoppix is what is known as a free linux distribution. You can D/L an ISO of Knoppix here at http://www.distrowatch.com You will also find a link the official Knoppix site. All you need to do is download the iso and burn it to a cdrom, then boot your computer from the CD and it will boot into Linux. Then you will be able to recover your data, surf the web even set up a samba server. Linux was meant to be free, not sold on Ebay.
