So your thinking about buying a kilt, but were do you start. After you enter kilt into the search engine it comes up with over one thousand responses. Some say pub crawler, others are part of a Prince Charlie Kilt with our without a waist coat. Just as with all suites you can always take the tie off but you can't put it back on.

Lets start at the begging and work out way to the top. The first thing you want to do is a little research on your family name, if you want to get a kilt thats directly related to your family clan. If not you can always choose a national kilt.

Irish national Kilt                           Scottish National Kilt               Welch National Kilt

Each is acceptable and can be worn as a casual kilt or a jacket can be added to spruce it up. If your looking for a pub crawler, just as the name implies, it's a kilt that is worn to have a pint of beer in or worn to a sporting event. Just wear the kilt as is, add socks, shoes and your favorite pub crawler shirt.

A pub crawler is usually made from 6 yards of tartan and made to be roughed up a bit. A dress kilt is made of 6 to 9 yards of tartan. Don't worry if your allergic to wool most economy kilts are made of polyester blends that won't itch. So lets dress it up abit and take mom out to dinner. The first thing to add is a sporran.

Sporrans are not "Man Purses" and never should be referred to them as such. A sporran is a place that the survival of the fittest was ensured. There the celts would place oats, flint, spare rifle pins an extra knife or whatever was needed to survive. Sporrans like kilts come in everyday use to the exotic dress up type. They fit around the waist and settle to the front of your torso for quick and easy access. Since your just taking mom out for dinner a casual sporran will do.

Day (Casual) Sporran                          Semi-Dress Sporran                     Pipers Sporran

Now lets add a shirt, I would suggest a ghillie shirt. A "ghillie" is a traditional highland shirt that can be worn for casual or semi-dress. It typically has long sleeves and the front eyelets tie with leather . Ghillies come in a wide variety of colors to fit your mood or style.

Socks are not simply socks there and expression of the kilt. Referred to as Kilt Hose they are usually cream in color with a variety of embroidery at the top. Add flashes to the kilt hose to complete the set. Flashes are colored flags that fit under the rolled down top of the kilt hose.

Foot wear can either be wing tipped shoes or ghillie brougues either will do. Ghillie brogues are traditional highland shoes that look like wing tips but have no shoe tongue and long laces that wrap around the calf. The shoe lace knot is twisted three times before the bow is ties.

Going formal use a formal sporran, ghillie brogues shoes, hose, flashes and a Prince Charlie Jacket with waist coat. You can go to the school prom, a high school reunion or even get married in it. Enjoy your ebay experience, you can buy now or bid to your hearts content. Don't forget to add your Sgian Dubh and Driks, every good highlander has at least one and of course a kilt belt with a belt buckle.

Me in my kilt purchased on ebay through smart bidding and buy now.
